Avanti Communications (LON:AVN) has won a place in a project aimed at giving internet access to rural residents in Kent, it revealed today.
The firm sells satellite broadband services to supply residential and institutional users.
In a Stock Exchange statement today, the firm said that "following a competitive tender, it has been awarded a place on the Kent County Council Rural Broadband framework, which will access funds of at least ?1.5 million to set up pilot projects to address the rural not spots of Kent using a range of technologies, including satellite".
The firm was the only satellite broadband provider selected, it said.
Previously, Kent County Council published an invitation to tender for rural broadband planning to spend ?44.3 million over the next 3 years.
Currently, 6.5 percent of households in Kent cannot get access to broad band because they are in "not spots", while 40 percent are not able to meet the 2meg universal service commitment (USC).
Last month, Avanti Communications reported its second contract win in less than two weeks saying Novasoft Corporaci?n S.L. was now a customer on its HYLAS 1 satellite in Spain.
The week before that, the company signed an additional agreement with Hughes Network Systems, which had allocated its initial capacity on HYLAS 1 to existing clients.
Avanti's first satellite - HYLAS 1 - launched in November 2010 and is the first superfast broadband satellite launched in Europe. The second satellite - HYLAS 2 is fully funded and will launch in Q2 2012. HYLAS 3 is currently in design.
