New material cuts energy costs of separating gas for plastics and fuels

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? A new type of hybrid material developed at the University of California, Berkeley, could help oil and chemical companies save energy and money -- and lower their environmental impacts -- by eliminating an energy-intensive gas-separation process.

Today, to separate hydrocarbon gas mixtures into the pure chemicals needed to make plastics, refineries "crack" crude oil at high temperatures -- 500 to 600 degrees Celsius -- to break complex hydrocarbons into lighter, short-chain molecules. They then chill the gaseous mixture to 100 degrees below zero Celsius to liquefy and divide the gases into those destined for plastics and those used as fuel for home heating and cooking.

"Cryogenic distillation at low temperatures and high pressures is among the most energy-intensive separations carried out at large scale in the chemical industry, and an environmental problem because of its contributions to global climate change," said Jeffrey Long, a professor of chemistry at the UC Berkeley and a faculty researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Long and his UC Berkeley colleagues now have created an iron-based material -- a metal-organic framework, or MOF -- that can be used at high temperatures to efficiently separate these gases while eliminating the chilling.

"You need a very pure feedstock of propylene and ethylene for making some of the most important polymers, such as polypropylene, for consumer products, but refineries dump a lot of energy into bringing the high temperature gases down to cryogenic temperatures," Long said. "If you can do the separation at higher temperatures, you can save that energy. This material is really good at doing these particular separations."

"The research conducted by the Long group exemplifies the potential of MOF-based materials relative to olefin/paraffin separations," said chemist Peter Nickias, a Dow Fellow at Dow Chemical Company in Michigan who was not involved in the research. "More specifically, the ability of the reported iron-based MOF to separate a variety of unsaturated hydrocarbons from saturated species not only shows the versatility of the iron-MOF system, but also clearly reveals the potential of MOFs as alternative adsorbents."

In the chemical industry, ethylene and propylene are called olefins, while methane, ethane and propane are called paraffins.

Long and his colleagues at UC Berkeley, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md., and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands report their findings in the March 30 issue of Science.

MOFs for natural gas purification

The iron-MOF is also good at purifying natural gas, which is a mixture of methane and various types of hydrocarbon impurities that have to be removed before the gas can be used by consumers. These impurities can then be sold for other uses, Long said.

"MOF compounds have a very high surface area, which provides lots of area a gas mixture can interact with, and that surface contains iron atoms that can bind the unsaturated hydrocarbons," Long said. "Acetylene, ethylene and propylene will stick to those iron sites much more strongly than will ethane, propane or methane. That is the basis for the separation."

Nickias noted that increased supplies of natural gas from shale have provided more opportunity to extract and use ethylene and propylene from natural gas, and a variety of materials and approaches are being examined to cut energy use during the refining and purification of olefins.

"Significant energy savings could be achieved if a non-distillation separation could be implemented, or more realistically, the load on a cryogenic distillation unit can be reduced via upstream modifications to the process," Nickias said.

Petroleum refined for the chemical industry is typically a mix of hydrocarbons, primarily two-carbon molecules -- ethane, ethylene and acetylene -- and three-carbon chains -- propane and propylene. Cryogenic distillation separates these compounds -- all of them gases at room temperature -- by liquefying them at low temperatures and high pressure, which causes them to separate by density. Ethylene and propylene go into plastic polymers, while ethane and propane are typically used for fuel.

The researchers found that when pumping a gas mixture through the iron-based MOF (Fe-MOF-74), the propylene and ethylene bind to the iron embedded in the matrix, letting pure propane and ethane through. In their trials, the ethane coming out was 99.0 to 99.5 percent pure. The propane output was close to 100 percent pure, since no propylene could be detected.

After the ethane and propane emerge, the MOF can be heated or depressurized to release ethylene and propylene pure enough for making polymers.

"Once you saturate the material ? with ethylene, for example -- you shut off the valve, stop the feed gas, warm up the absorber unit and the ethylene would come out in pure form as a gas," Long said.

MOFs are like packed soda straws

Through a microscope, Fe-MOF-74 looks like a collection of narrow tubes packed together like drinking straws in a box. Each tube is made of organic materials and six long strips of iron, which run lengthwise along the tube. Analysis by Long's colleagues at the NIST Center for Neutron Research showed that different light hydrocarbons have varied levels of attraction to the tubes' iron. By passing a mixed-hydrocarbon gas through a series of filters made of the tubes, the hydrocarbon with the strongest affinity can be removed in the first filter layer, the next strongest in the second layer, and so forth.

"It works well at 45 degrees Celsius, which is closer to the temperature of hydrocarbons at some points in the distillation process," said coauthor Wendy Queen, a postdoctoral fellow at NIST who worked for six months in Long's UC Berkeley lab. "The upshot is that if we can bring the MOF to market as a filtration device, the energy-intensive cooling step potentially can be eliminated. We are now trying out metals other than iron in the MOF in case we can find one that works even better."

Long and his laboratory colleagues are developing iron-based MOFs to capture carbon from smokestack emissions and sequester it to prevent its release into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. Similar MOFs, which can be made with different pore sizes and metals, turn out to be ideal for separating different types of hydrocarbons and for storing hydrogen and methane for use as fuel.

Long's other colleagues are UC Berkeley graduate students Eric D. Bloch and Joseph M. Zadrozny; Rajamani Krishna of the Van't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences at the University of Amsterdam; and Craig M. Brown of NIST and The Bragg Institute at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation in Menai, New South Wales.

The research is part of the Center for Gas Separations Relevant to Clean Energy Technologies, an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the Department of Energy that focuses primarily on creating novel materials for capturing and storing carbon dioxide.

'Speed of light' experiment professor resigns

ROME?? The Italian professor who led an experiment that initially appeared to challenge one of the fundaments of modern physics by showing particles moving faster than the speed of light has resigned after the finding was overturned earlier this month.

Italy's national institute of nuclear physics INFN said on Friday that Antonio Ereditato had stepped down as coordinator of the so-called OPERA experiment but had no comment beyond saying it "took note" of his decision.

It was not immediately possible to reach Ereditato for a comment.

The experiment measuring the speed at which sub-atomic particles called neutrinos traveled from the CERN research center in Geneva to Gran Sasso in central Italy at first appeared to show they had flown the 730 km stretch 60 billionths of a second faster than light.

Had it been confirmed, the finding would have disproved Albert Einstein's 1905 Special Theory of Relativity, one of the foundations of modern physics and cosmology, which holds that nothing in the universe can travel faster than light.

The result of the experiment was later called into question by separate experiments and CERN said the OPERA result appeared to be the result of a measurement error or malfunction.

Empty or nearly empty cans of water-based paint, if you let them dry out completely, can be put into your household trash ? but don?t do this with cans that contain oil-based paint or any combustible or flammable liquid. Those need to be taken to a household waste recycling event or facility.? Search online to find one in your neighborhood.

The patent also talks about a "remote processing unit," in a nearby device or in the cloud, so, if the company can ever turn the dream into reality, the real action will be handled elsewhere. Then again, it's equally as likely to never appear in our lifetimes, you just never can tell with patents.

Top 6 Anti-Aging Tips

We all want to look and feel younger. Our society is beauty-obsessed, and Americans spend billions of dollars on anti-aging products each year. But?it doesn't have to be that way.

Here are six things?you can do to slow down and in some cases even reverse the signs of aging naturally:

1. Get enough sleep

When you sleep your body releases growth hormone which stimulates cell turnover, so a lack of sleep can accelerate aging and stress the body.?Sleep research shows that just one week of sleep deprivation alters hormone levels and the capacity to metabolize carbohydrates. Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

2. Drink alkaline ionized water

According to dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone, author of The Perricone Perscription, "If you have any doubts about the effect of water intake on our skin, just put a grape and a raisin side by side...If you do not drink water, your organs and cells cannot function.

How can your skin be soft and plumped up if you refuse the elixir of life?"

Alkaline ionized water from a water ionizer is up to six times more hydrating than conventional water, can literally plump cells up to twice their size, and contains three times more antioxidants than a glass of OJ! Choose?natural skin care products and?cleaners,?open windows as often as possible?and invest in an air purifier and water ionizer. 5. Stress less

Research shows that stress speeds the aging process on a cellular level by harming DNA. Phil Davis ?happy? Rashad Evans poked holes in his game

When Phil Davis was put on the UFC's second Fox card against Rashad Evans, he knew the pressure was on. Not only did he need to keep his undefeated streak going, but he also needed to create an exciting bout for network fans tuning into the UFC for the first time.

The result? A fight dominated by Rashad Evans as Davis struggled to find a rhythm. Davis told the MMA Hour that he couldn't slow down in the bout, which ended up exhausting him.

"I got myself into one of the situations where you've got to go all out to get out of that, and put out a lot of energy," he said. "That kind of put me behind on momentum, and from there, Rashad was just the calmer guy. He eased into the fight better. More and more, I was trying to do more to gain momentum and he was just calm and collected."

It was the first loss of Davis' MMA career. He ended his NCAA wrestling career with a championship, so it's the first time Davis has lost in at least four years. A loss like that can shake a man, but Davis took a different view of it.

"I'm glad he poked holes in my game," he said. "Because now I can fix some of those holes and know where the No. 2 guy in the world is going to beat me. Now I have a benchmark. Losing is not the worst thing in the world. The worst thing in the world is not getting better. I'm glad I got that fight. I'm glad I got it twice, and I'm just real excited about where I'm at in my career."

While he waits for his next opponent, Davis is helping his friend and teammate, Dominick Cruz, coach on this season of "The Ultimate Fighter." At 27, he's still a young and exciting fighter who has plenty to learn about MMA. A newly refocused Davis should be a force to reckon with.

Frontier Internet | Home Internet Providers

Frontier Internet, or Frontier Communications Corporation, is a telephone company in the U.S. that has a reputation for providing services mostly to both rural as well as smaller neighborhoods. In the past decade or so, it has undergone two name changes, having been known first as the Citizens Utilities Company until May of 2000 and then as Citizens Communications Company until July of 2008.

Pets for Patriots

Several weeks ago I saw an article forwarded from Pets for Patriots. Ok, I was curious about this organization. So, my first thoughts were that they are assisting in the placement of service dogs with vets with PTSD. Well I was WRONG. Isn?t it interesting how we see something and automatically ?know? what is is without doing further inquiry? Another reminder to be present and not on autopilot. After reviewing their site, I contacted Beth Zimmerman, the Founder, Executive Director and CEO. We had a great conversation talking about the great work she and the organization have been up to.

Pets for Patriots? mission is to consistently give the gifts of fidelity, joy and companionship to both pet and person through honorable companion pet adoption.

Our mission is a call to duty to:

• Facilitate hard-to-place shelter animal adoptions by military personnel, working with our network of member shelters, veterinarians and other pet care providers
• Improve the well-being of service personnel through companion pet adoption, a humane way of easing the stresses of military transitions as service members return from deployment, re-enter civilian life or retire
• Foster education and awareness of the causes, conditions and numbers of animals relinquished to shelters each year in the United States, enjoining individuals around the country to our cause
• Educating the military community and the public about the numerous benefits of adopting last-chance shelter dogs and cats

What a great organization that is providing support for at risk shelter animals, our patriots, and our communities across the country. It is an honor to have them on the program.
