Several weeks ago I saw an article forwarded from Pets for Patriots. Ok, I was curious about this organization. So, my first thoughts were that they are assisting in the placement of service dogs with vets with PTSD. Well I was WRONG. Isn?t it interesting how we see something and automatically ?know? what is is without doing further inquiry? Another reminder to be present and not on autopilot. After reviewing their site, I contacted Beth Zimmerman, the Founder, Executive Director and CEO. We had a great conversation talking about the great work she and the organization have been up to.
Taken from their mission page:
Pets for Patriots? mission is to consistently give the gifts of fidelity, joy and companionship to both pet and person through honorable companion pet adoption.
Our mission is a call to duty to:
- Facilitate hard-to-place shelter animal adoptions by military personnel, working with our network of member shelters, veterinarians and other pet care providers
- Improve the well-being of service personnel through companion pet adoption, a humane way of easing the stresses of military transitions as service members return from deployment, re-enter civilian life or retire
- Foster education and awareness of the causes, conditions and numbers of animals relinquished to shelters each year in the United States, enjoining individuals around the country to our cause
- Educating the military community and the public about the numerous benefits of adopting last-chance shelter dogs and cats
What a great organization that is providing support for at risk shelter animals, our patriots, and our communities across the country. It is an honor to have them on the program.
This weeks blogs?
Did you know that? It?s the 50th anniversary of Poison Prevention Week, and it?s a reminder to discuss how and what can poison our pets. From the foods we eat, the medications in our cabinets to the plants in our yards. Check out our first article for some interesting details: Poison Prevention Week: How to Keep your Pet Safe. Always a great reminder that we are different beings. So, do you think you have great taste in music and your pets enjoy listening to it when you take out your ear buds and actually use speakers?? While I can be found listening to Motley Crue, the Beatles, Chris Isaak, Meatloaf (yes I?m dating myself) it turns out that:?Animal Psychologists Discover Pets Prefer Their Own Music. Will this mean a new categories on Amazon and iTunes? Dog- Large. Dog- Beagle, Cat- grey, Hamster- wheel in the sky? (I couldn?t help myself with the last one.) Any thoughts on how soon we will see this? Here is an interesting story about service dogs and the difference they can make: The sick little girl given a new leash of life by her dog: How Mr Gibbs keeps Alida, 3, alive by strapping oxygen tank to his back. Curious how the most detailed article I found is from the Daily Mail in London? and finally a look at the 5 richest pets:?Who are the world?s richest pets? Interesting how the attention is on how much people are leaving them, when maybe the conversation is that these people should be applauded for actually taking the time to make sure they are taken care of in a trust where they will not be treated as beneficiaries, not property. Have you set up a trust so your pets won?t be left behind like the old T.V. in the closet?

Now, back to my guests this week?
Beth Zimmerman, Founder, Pets for Patriots
Beth, welcome to the program!

What we do
We create unique opportunities for members of the military community to save a life by honorably adopting homeless adult dogs and cats.
We support member Patriot adoptions of adult shelter pets, large dogs and special needs animals ? those most in need of a loving, forever home ? from any of our member shelters. To ease the financial costs associated with pet ownership, we partner with veterinarians to deliver a minimum 10% discount for the life of the adopted pet?s care. Pets for Patriots provides access to additional cost reductions for pet basics, such as food, toys and essential supplies.
We?re determined to make the joys of adult pet ownership achievable and affordable for the men and women of the U.S. military.
Our goal is to make the benefits of shelter pet adoption a reality for military personnel, ensuring many years of friendship, companionship and joy with their honorably adopted dog or cat.
