Fido kicks off LTE network across Canada

Android Central

Fido announced today the availability of LTE coverage in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and St. John's. Expansions later this year are planned for Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kingston, Quebec City, and lots of other areas. They don't have any LTE phones just yet, but they do have a a mobile hotspot available to kick things off. Speeds average between 12 Mbps and 25 Mbps, and sometimes hitting 40 Mbps. Of course, Fido is really just tapping into the LTE network built by their parent company, Rogers, but at least means a few more high-speed options for those that prefer to go prepaid. Fido's top data add-on is $25 for 2 GB, or you can opt for 500 MB as part of their top-tier $50 plan.

More LTE is great and all, but I'd really like to see the little guys like WIND and Mobilicity get on the bandwagon. LTE is a big selling point for going with Rogers, Bell, or TELUS, even if the smaller carriers can beat them on plan prices. Fido would need some pretty compelling plans in order to pull away customers from Bell, TELUS, or even its big brother Rogers, but even though they've doubled up the data allocations on the two lower tiers, I'm still not entirely sold.

In any case,  more info on Fido's LTE roll-out is available here. Anyone on Fido hankering for LTE and not willing to go to the Big Three to get it?

Anger and Ecstasy in Tampa

Last night's Republican National Convention speeches were the serious business, the real meat and rhetorical potatoes of the summit. Sure candidate Mitt will bless us all with his highest-authority words tonight, but last night, which culminated in a stirring speech by VP candidate Paul Ryan, was the true heart of the matter. The king's words seem somehow not as potent as those of the ones who spend their lives paying him slavish devotion, right? Those are the people we want to hear from, the "Why" people, and last night they spoke to us. And, look, try as I might to be non-partisan, to view these things as spectacle rather than affirmation of policy, last night it became impossible to do that. No, what I saw last night frankly chilled me to the bone.

RELATED: Boehner Calls Obama's Bluff, Links Pipeline to Payroll Tax Vote

I suppose I'm weak for only being able to last a day of this convention trying to be neutral about the whole thundering affair. Someone of thicker skin or perhaps a more generous spirit could probably cover these proceedings with a consistent personal detachment. This is a story here, these are people who believe a thing, or lots of things, and that's an interesting thing to look at and discuss. Not with condescending anthropology, but with the same human interest you would give to someone across the room at a party. These aren't just our fellow people, they are closer, more intimate to us than that. We share space, the same country. They're the car in front of us at the drive-thru, at the checkout line, waiting with equal impatience for the movie to start. So that is, then, a noble endeavor. To examine them with impartiality, measured reason, open mind, all that. And me not being "a politics guy," I tried to do that, thought I could. Well, two nights in and I've failed.

RELATED: Romney's Medicare Plan Gets Bipartisan Cover

There were obvious lies in Paul Ryan's speech. Condoleezza Rice, with all her trembling emoting and grandeur, can probably never speak louder than the fact that she had a hand in one of the greatest foreign policy injustices in American history. Mike Huckabee is a good-natured charlatan. These are the obvious gripes about who spoke at the RNC last night. But what really got me was what was behind the easy identifiers and grinning, hopeful veneers. Even the most hard-hearted lefty among us would have trouble not getting, at one point or another, swept up in the podium-rattling talk of a brighter future, a stronger America. But then there is the sudden sharp reminder of what these people stand for, what their control would really bring ? what it would mean for women and their bodies, for non-straight people, for the poor who cannot dig themselves out with a stirring Horatio Alger story. And that's what left me so shaken last night. They are spending unending amounts of time talking about the economy, about the Obama administration's failures, about their own blinkered versions of the past, and about the vague things they would do to right this leaning ship, because of course those are important matters. But as the 2010 election of the supposedly economics-only Tea Partiers showed us, the social issues are way too juicy a fruit for them to simply ignore in favor of pragmatic fiscal concerns.

RELATED: Gingrich Is the Most Polarizing Candidate But Also Most Admired

There have been allusions to marriage and abortion and various other social matters throughout this convention, but they have not been talked about head-on, it's all been on the side, little dog-whistle references for those paying attention. Paul Ryan sneaked it in last night during his mostly economy-concerned speech, saying "The man who will accept your nomination tomorrow is prayerful and faithful and honorable. Not only a defender of marriage, he offers an example of marriage at its best." Just like that. "Defender of marriage" communicating a whole anti-gay platform. Mike Huckabee was a bit more direct, but even he, the Evangelical, didn't go full tilt. He devoted about a minute to the social policies that are at the foundation of his politics, saying Obama "tells people of faith that they have to?bow their knees to the God of government and violate their faith?and conscience in order to comply with what he calls, health?care." And of course we have to consider Ann Romney's blaring invocation of her "real marriage" on Tuesday night, that "real" landing hard and sticky, the crowd losing it at the righteousness of it all. The audience seems to enjoy the secret language, they have fun with the "non-PC" whispering that insists they are simply better, morally pure, the socially anointed. These are built-in rallying cries that you can try to dismiss as cynical appeals to a hardcore base, but are still received loud and clear by those who genuinely believe in the message. They telegraph a monolithic sameness of moral convicion that this crowd relishes in as if in religious ecstasy.?

RELATED: The Expectations the Candidates Are Supposed to Beat

The economy is something that affects us all, and so it's most of what's directly spoken about in Tampa, to lure the supposed undecided in, to give the Republican platform something concrete and relatively uncontroversial to rest on. But there's a cruel trick in this strategy, the same one the Tea Party pulled in 2010. There is a huge, roiling social animus fueling these candidates that only gets talked about in certain hushed tones, in certain places. But electing them would very much give them the opportunity to pull down the curtain and go full-bore into the kind of social engineering they are, it seems sometimes, chiefly concerned with. The Tea Party said it would focus on economics, but in the last two years, when not maneuvering around an imminent government shutdown, pushed the debate straight at Planned Parenthood, straight towards personhood, straight towards legislation like the kind in North Carolina that doesn't just ban gay marriage, it essentially bans gay couplehood outright. These are economic issues how? Why should we expect any dissimilar behavior from those speaking at the RNC? Sure Paul Ryan will have the tempering Saltine presence of Mitt Romney to slow his roll a bit, but even so. Even so, the cheering and whooping for these men and women, the huge auditorium filled to the brim with people who love them despite their insidious views on people who don't fit into their worldview, is horrifically dispiriting. You realize, watching this seething mass of people, that the secret, the economics stage show, is for us, on the outside. All the fiscal talk is for our benefit. Everyone in that room really knows what's being spoken about: Getting lazy poor people off their teat, sticking it to those gays, making sure we don't have to pay for some slut's sinful abortion. For all the cheer and cowboy hats and smiles and Christian blessings, this is an angry, aggressive group. And they are, or at least have been chosen to represent, nominally half of us. Half of us here in this country.

RELATED: The Fancy Things in Romney's Taxes

So, neutrality be damned, that's what I saw last night. A churning sea of something truly scary. The shapeless leader at the top of the pyramid may be a wishy-washy cipher, but those that make up the rest of the structure are yawing far enough to the right as to be frightening. And what's most terrifying about them is the way they mute their own indecency, wrapping it up and tucking it into the middle of platitudes and generalities, for the purposes of these televised events. Sure all the coded stuff is pretty easy to decipher, but it's still coded, it's still deliberately obscured. As if even they are, at root, scared of their own darkness.

Breaking Bad Season 5

Like the rest of you, I?m extremely skeptical of Walt?s relationship with Todd. I loved the montage of them cooking. Walt is a wonderful teacher, encouraging even: ?You did fine Todd, you applied yourself, that?s as much as I can ask.? But, just as the Scarface reference in Episode 3 seems a handy foreshadowing of Walt?s eventual fate (speaking of which, what was the movie Mike was smugly watching when the DEA raided his house?), The Monkees? misleadingly upbeat ?Goin? Down? surely offers us some clues to the future of this relationship. ?And it's so hard to stay afloat/ I'm soakin' wet without a boat.? Walt is floating along at this point, clearly desperate for some human interaction?someone who looks up to him and respects him. Todd can?t judge Walt because he never knew him before. Walt was always Heisenberg to Todd. This recognition, as you mentioned, Matt, is all Walt has left.

Breaking Bad, Season 5. Mike (Jonathan Banks)

Photograph by Ursula Coyote/AMC.

But to answer your question more directly, no, it doesn?t seem like Walt has a plan, at least not a good one. This episode?s opening scene, which as Matt suggested might be the beginning (if not the middle) of Walt?s downfall, was the first time I really doubted one of his plans. Before last night, even if I wasn?t on his side, I always felt confident that Walt would figure everything out, but this plan seemed kind of, well, half-baked. What exactly is he proposing, and are they really scared of him just because he killed Gus? It?s still not clear to me why Declan would even go along with it; after all, if he just killed Walt, he?d be the guy who killed the guy who killed Gus. (Not to mention he?d eliminate his biggest competition.) But maybe that?s just me thinking a little too much like Walt, not keeping in mind the repercussions.

Let?s not forget Jesse, though. Walt?s promise from last week clearly didn?t go as planned?everyone didn?t win. With Mike dead, where does that leave Jesse? I was glad to see him walk away when Walt got all high and mighty about the ?blood money.? The earlier shot of Walter closing the garage door on Jesse and Mike made me (naively) hope that he was done with them?but now that Mike?s dead, I?m eager to see how Jesse reacts. Will he come back? Will he be the one to finally turn on Walt?

Speaking of Mike, our legal expert Emily is not here, but I?d love for someone to explain this to me: Is Mike Dan?s client, and if so, can a lawyer flip on a client like that? I don?t watch as many procedurals as you, Matt, but isn?t that illegal? At the very least, doesn?t it defeat the purpose of attorney-client privilege? I?m not exactly sure how this works, but it seems strange to me that Mike would leave himself vulnerable like that when he?s so careful about paying off everyone else?though I will admit I loved Gomez?s confident grin when Dan got caught.

Which reminds me, is anyone else skeptical of Walt?s excellent timing? It felt a little absurd to me that Walt would be in the office at the exact moment that Gomez told Hank that Dan would flip on Mike. It reminded me of the Arrested Development gag mocking TV shows in which characters turn on the TV and the segment they were discussing just happens to be playing exactly at that moment.

Emily Nussbaum wrote a fabulous piece in last week?s New Yorker making the suggestion that Breaking Bad might be ?a hero?s tale in disguise,? a story in which Hank is really the hero and the series ends with some relief for the ?suffering audience.? As much as I rooted for Walt to outsmart Hank in the show?s first few seasons, this episode reminded me that Hank is actually a great detective (even if he can?t see what?s right in front of him). But having the series end with Hank virtuous and victorious doesn?t sound like Breaking Bad at all. I suspect that Hank will have to compromise himself in this pursuit. After all, that scolding he got about spending too much time and effort trailing Mike screamed illegal wiretap. Or maybe now I?m just confusing this show with The Wire.

Shut the fuck up and let me die in peace,

Vitamin B12 deficiency: Tracking the genetic causes

Monday, August 27, 2012

Vitamin B12 is essential to human health. However, some people have inherited conditions that leave them unable to process vitamin B12. As a result they are prone to serious health problems, including developmental delay, psychosis, stroke and dementia. An international research team recently discovered a new genetic disease related to vitamin B12 deficiency by identifying a gene that is vital to the transport of vitamin into the cells of the body. This discovery will help doctors better diagnose this rare genetic disorder and open the door to new treatments. The findings are published in the journal Nature Genetics.

"We found that a second transport protein was involved in the uptake of the vitamin into the cells, thus providing evidence of another cause of hereditary vitamin B12 deficiency", said Dr. David Rosenblatt, one of the study's co-authors, scientist in medical genetics and genomics at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC) and Dodd Q. Chu and Family Chair in Medical Genetics and the Chair of the Department of Human Genetics at McGill University. "It is also the first description of a new genetic disease associated with how vitamin B12 is handled by the body".

These results build on previous research by the same team from the RI MUHC and McGill University, with their colleagues in Switzerland, Germany and the United States. In previous work, the researchers discovered that vitamin B12 enters our cells with help from of a specific transport protein. In this study, they were working independently with two patients showing symptoms of the cblF gene defect of vitamin B12 metabolism but without an actual defect in this gene. Their work led to the discovery of a new gene, ABCD4, associated with the transport of B12 and responsible for a new disease called cblJ combined homocystinuria and methylmalonic aciduria (cblJ-Hcy-MMA).

Using next generation sequencing of the patients' genetic information, the scientists identified two mutations in the same ABCD4 gene, in both patients. "We were also able to compensate for the genetic mutation by adding an intact ABCD4 protein to the patients' cells, thus allowing the vitamin to be properly integrated into the cells," explained Dr. Matthias Baumgartner, senior author of the study and a Professor of metabolic diseases at Zurich's University Children's Hospital.

Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is essential for healthy functioning of the human nervous system and red blood cell synthesis. Unable to produce the vitamin itself, the human body has to obtain it from animal-based foods such as milk products, eggs, red meat, chicken, fish, and shellfish ? or vitamin supplements. Vitamin B12 is not found in vegetables.

"This discovery will lead to the early diagnosis of this serious genetic disorder and has given us new paths to explore treatment options. It also helps explain how vitamin B12 functions in the body, even for those without the disorder," said Dr. Rosenblatt who is the director of one of only two referral laboratories in the world for patients suspected of having this genetic inability to absorb vitamin B12. Dr. Rosenblatt points out that the study of patients with rare diseases is essential to the advancement of our knowledge of human biology.

Nexus 7 checks off Spain, Germany and France on availability chart, sells for a premium

Google Play quietly updated its device availability page over the weekend, making the Nexus 7 available to Germany, France and Spain. Patient Europeans can now pick up Mountain View's seven-inch wonderkind's 8GB and 16GB models for €199 and €249, respectively. Conversion rates comparatively price the slate at about $248 and $311, meaning the new markets will have to suffer a small premium for the slate. Worse still, is that not all of Google Play's services are available worldwide, with both Play Music and Magazines retaining US exclusivity. If you can bear with the inconveniences, however, one fine little tablet awaits.

From Script to Screen - Yvonne Grace | Brit Writers Awards

From Script to Screen?
Brit Writers spoke to?Yvonne Grace ?

?

Who is Yvonne Grace?

I am trained in Theatre Design (got a BA Hons degree in it anyway!) and am an ex-actress, having worked for 5 years in Theatre In Education and Community Theatre Companys. I realised that it was the written word, not the spoken, that interested and excited me and so I went into script development and reading lots of scripts for lots of organisations including, Channel Four, Radio Four, The Young Vic, The Bush Theatre, and most new writing venues in London in the late 80?s early 90?s. I set up The Deptford Wives (since I was then living in Deptford ? the title suggested itself!) ? a script development company and ran successful script in hand performances out of the Birds Nest Theatre Pub in Deptford. I went into television via a script editing job on Eastenders and worked my way along the script editing route and into drama producing. I have produced children?s drama for CITV and Holby City for the BBC and also executive produced Crossroads for ITV as well as developing lots of long running series ideas for both markets with a wide variety of writers. I set up Script Advice in 2007 to help writers write better scripts, primarily for the tv market. I also design and run short courses for organisations such as C4, The National Film and TV school, and The Script Factory and am speaking at the London Screenwriters Festival in October and at their Breakfast Club in September. In 2006 I left the city, moved to the country, got married and had a little boy in space of a year. His name is Michael, he is 4 and a half and starts school in September. I plan then to re-start my own writing career!

?

?

Had you always been interested in scriptwriting?

I have always been interested in how writers write and why they do. I have always been fascinated by the written word and by stories. I believe storytelling is in my blood and the need to express stories to as many people as possible is a very real thing in me. I love to read and to immerse myself in a book or a film or a radio play. I enjoy all genres of storytelling and found shaping a writer?s ideas for a large audience (which is ultimately the work I have done on television) a very exciting and rewarding job to do.

?

?

What were the most difficult challenges you?ve had to overcome?

I believe the most difficult challenge for me when I was starting out was the fact that I did not know anyone in the television world or anyone who had even done the job or heard of the job that I had managed to land for myself on Eastenders. I wasn?t educated at Oxford or Cambridge and at the time I was trying to get into telly, most drama jobs seemed to have an Oxbridge graduate in them. So I had to be tenacious, confident, polite, thick-skinned and also really really know my stuff. I thankfully managed to achieve some, if not all, of the requirements necessary and after 2 years of knocking on doors I got the intro I needed by the insightful invitation to join Eastenders from Helen Greaves.

?

What has been your major highlight to date and tell us more about some of the projects you?ve been involved with?

A major highlight for me was winning the LWT Comedy Award for Best Children?s Comedy for the Children?s pilot I produced ?My Dad?s A Boring Nerd? written by Joe Turner. I also have huge affection for Crossroads, and particularly the last metamorphosis of the show, as I Executive Produced the show, changed it?s image and cast Jane Asher as the Uber Bitch Angel Sampson. I am very proud of the ratings we achieved (1.5 million a day across the week) and enjoyed working with such a talented team of creatives both in front and behind the camera. I am also very proud of the success I made of Holby City series 2. I turned the show around from being a critical, but not ratings success, to being both popular with the critics and popular with audiences. My series gained a top viewing figure of 9.6 million and I believe these figures ensured Holby?s continued success. Again, the success of this show is a team effort and it is working with writers and actors and production crews that both know their stuff and enjoy doing their stuff that really makes working in television enjoyable and rewarding.

?

?

What advice would you give to new unpublished scriptwriters?

Write yourself a very very good calling card script first and foremost. Then target the people you want to read your work. Be selective and be respectful at all times. Be tenacious and try at all times to show confidence in your work and in yourself (even if you dont always feel like that!) When someone gives you a chance, no matter how small it may seem at the time, or that it might not be just exactly what you want ? take it and do your best always with the opportunities you are given and those you create for yourself.

?

Tell us more about ?Script Advice??

Script Advice is a website that I run that offers script reading, script editing, script development and treatment reading services for any writer interested in developing their skill base and writing craft. I know about television, so that is my main area of expertise that I like to pass on to my clients, but I also read plays, novels and radio plays. I know what it is like to write in a vacuum and feel isolated from other writers ? so I also, via Script Advice, offer writers a place to go to ask questions, to find support and advice. I write 2 blogs and distribute a newsletter 4 times a year via my Facebook group Script Advice Writers Room and by my mail list. If writers contact me on my email address from my website I also try and help and will get back to you as soon as I can. I also run workshops and short courses on storylining, script editing and treatment writing. I basically love working with people and although I see myself as a leader, not a team player, I thrive on the buzz we all get from sharing our experiences and learning from each other ? my workshops celebrate the difference in all our writer voices and I try and pass on my experience in writing and shaping drama for the small screen to as many people as I can.

?

?

How important are initiatives such as Brit Writers?

Brit Writers is a great organisation. I love the support that you offer both young people and fully grown ups! Your work in schools regarding literacy and encouraging joy in reading and writing is very important work and I commend you for this.

?

?

What would you like to say to anyone reading this right now?

I would like to say to anyone reading this; have faith in your own ability and stretch yourself and your writing, if possible, on a daily basis. Self belief and looking challenge in the face is something all writers need to be able to master and do. Writing is like psychotherapy in some ways, know yourself and you will make a better writer ? so always look to yourself to find the truth in what you write. Listen to those that have experience in the craft and the industry, take all advice with grace and as much as possible, be realistic about what you can achieve and about your own skill. Do not worry about your failings, try and improve and go forward each day.

The Pros And Cons Of Renting Commercial Property | Tic Tracker

After much consideration, you have decided that commercial real estate dealing is an area you want to explore. You may have many questions about it, but there is no need to worry because this article has helpful information for you. The following paragraphs are your springboard to commercial real estate profits.

Strive to keep your commercial properties occupied at all times if you choose to rent them to tenants. Having unoccupied spaces mean that you have to pay for their upkeep. If you notice that you have several vacant properties, try to find out why, and look at ways of enticing tenants back in.

Always include emergency maintenance on your list of need to know things. Make sure to consult your landlord about emergency repair responsibilities in your building or office. Keep their numbers updated, and know how long it takes them to arrive on average. Use the information from your landlord to prepare an emergency plan to protect your reputation and customer service for the times when your normal business flow is disrupted.

You will probably have to put a lot of effort into your new investment at the beginning. Although the investment might be a tremendous opportunity, it will only be good if you take care of any repairs or perhaps do a bit of remodeling. Do not give up because this process takes too much of your time. The investment will be repaid as time goes on.

TIP! Be sure about the correct square footage available. Properties are measured in term of usable square feet or the total square footage which includes uninhabitable space.

It is important to be aware of all of the environmental issues and obligations related to your property. For example, one of the most important environmental concerns that every property owner must deal with is hazardous waste disposal. Failure to remove waste properly can be a huge problem. As owner of the property, you must be willing and able to address these concerns, regardless of whether you were directly responsible for them.

See how your considered firm measure its results. Ask them how they estimate your needed space, what criteria they use to vet potential properties and how they intend to get you the best price. Kknowing this before signing an agreement with them has many benefits.

As you hunt for prospective properties, you should keep an eye out for real estate opportunities that are larger than you are looking for. Although you may feel overwhelmed by the number of units you will be responsible for in a large building, it actually doesn?t take more work to take care of large buildings successfully. Plus, larger buildings are cheaper in the long run?you pay less for each unit if the building has more units.

Before initiating a purchase, be sure that you are negotiating with a customer-focused company. If you work with a company that only cares about its own profits, you might lose money on preventable mistakes.

TIP! If you trying to choose between two or more potential properties, it?s good to think bigger in terms of perspective. Finding the right bank to finance you might be hard, even if you are going for a smaller building.

Remember that your relationship to the investors or lenders plays an important role. Many commercial real estate is bought and sold without ever being on the market. Networking far and wide will keep you up-to-date on what?s going on in the industry and also make you privy to great deals.

Volatility in interest rates is one of the biggest risks to investors of commercial real estate. Current economic conditions can make rates rise and fall with shocking unpredictability, which leaves investors open to the possibility of drastic increases in the interest rates. Keep this in mind as you start considering your different options.

Focus on a single investment each time. Whether your investment choice is retail, land or rental buildings, choose one arena of investment to focus on exclusively for now. Each kind of investment will requires a full time commitment. You?re better off being an expert at one than you are being average at many.

TIP! Retain an attorney who is experienced in commercial real estate law before you purchase your first property. It is best to always be protected by a trustworthy, knowledgeable legal professional who can help you to resolve any issues that may arise.

Before you choose your real estate broker, find out how they negotiate. Inquire about their training and experience. Ensure that the broker fights tooth and nail to get you the best price on your property, but make sure he or she doesn?t use underhanded tactics. Request to see examples of previous negotiations, both those that were unsuccessful and those that were successful.

You should now be ready to purchase your first commercial property. If you had considered yourself knowledgeable before, you known even more now. The advice of this article should be a good base of knowledge for you to build your success in commercial real estate on, and meet or exceed all of your hopes and

(AP) ? U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is in a "deep" depression and has "a lot of work" ahead of him on the road to recovery, former Rhode Island U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy said Thursday after visiting the hospitalized Chicago Democrat.

Jackson has been on a secretive medical leave since June 10, when family members said he collapsed at their home in Washington. He is currently being treated for bipolar disorder at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. But neither his office nor family members have said much about his medical condition.

The visit from Kennedy ? who has suffered with bipolar disorder and been treated at Mayo ? gave one of the first outside glimpses of Jackson's health.

"I don't think people understand the depth of his depression. It's deep. He has a lot of work to continue to do to be able to learn how to treat this illness in the most effective way possible," Kennedy told The Associated Press. "Depression is a serious thing, and I'm glad that he's taking it seriously."

Kennedy also suggested Jackson had an initial reluctance to receive help for his illness.

The congressman's wife, Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, issued a statement through spokesman Kevin Lampe about Kennedy's visit: "My husband is grateful for his friendship. He and Jesse have a long history in Congress together."

Jackson's spokesman declined to comment Thursday, and it's uncertain when Jackson can return to work. Last week, an aide said the congressman could be expected back at work in a matter of weeks. But after the Mayo Clinic released a detailed diagnosis of his health, his spokesman declined to comment. Jackson's father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, also has declined to speak on the topic.

Kennedy, who served with Jackson on the House Appropriations Committee, left Congress last year. He has been an outspoken advocate for mental health and spoken publicly about his own struggles.

He's said he and Jackson have similarities: They both come from famous families and have suffered from the same disorder.

"It was clear we both had the same feelings of dejection and self-doubt and being in a situation where we thought we had let people down and let ourselves down," Kennedy said. "It's going to take him some time to heal."

Kennedy called Jackson a resilient person with "terrific self-awareness" and said he was confident Jackson will come back from this.

"He recognizes the challenges that he faces. That's a big step on the long road to recovery. He's doing the work so he can take that journey forward," Kennedy said. "He's getting stronger and he's getting the support he needs to put together a program of recovery." Kennedy added that Jackson's family had been to visit him many times.

The congressman's office has said little about Jackson's absence aside from short emailed statements. His office remains open for constituent services, and his aides have continued communication with officials in his district, which includes parts of Chicago and its southern suburbs.

His office initially described the condition ? two weeks after he went on leave ? as treatment for exhaustion. Later, it was referred to as a "mood disorder." Jackson, 47, spent time at the Sierra Tucson Treatment Center in Arizona before his office announced late last month that he was transferred to Mayo.

It was only this week that the Mayo Clinic specified his condition as Bipolar II. The condition affects parts of the brain controlling emotion, thought and drive.

Kennedy said it appeared that Jackson wasn't initially ready to acknowledge that he needed medical care.

"He's been through kind of a metamorphosis. The notion that he was getting mental health care was very distasteful," Kennedy told the AP after the visit with Jackson, which lasted more than an hour Thursday afternoon. "He did not want to acknowledge that this was the kind of help he needed. It took a public outing."

In their few public comments about his illness, family members have pointed to the stress of Jackson's job and the political disappointments over the years. Jackson, who first won office in 1995, once had his sights set on being a U.S. senator or Chicago's mayor. But those were dimmed in the wake of allegations that Jackson was connected to imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The timing of the medical leave also has invited more scrutiny on that front.

A pending House Ethics Committee investigation is focusing on allegations that Jackson discussed raising money for Blagojevich's campaign so the then-Illinois governor would appoint him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich is serving a prison sentence for corruption.

Also, Jackson's office announced the medical leave days after a former fundraiser connected to the allegations was arrested on unrelated federal medical fraud charges.

Jackson hasn't been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

Syria's civil war and the geopolitics overtaking it

Syria's civil war grinds on. Rebel forces claimed responsibility for a massive bomb blast in Damascus today that they said targeted a meeting of senior officers in Bashar al-Assad's Army. In the past week, rebel forces were routed from some neighborhoods of Aleppo, the country's commercial capital, after a hail of shells killed rebel fighters and civilians alike and left many districts of the city in ruins.

In other parts of Aleppo, the battle rages on, and for good reason. The loss of Syria's largest city would prove catastrophic for Mr. Assad. But the focus there is creating other problems for the regime. Reuters reports that the focus on Aleppo has left the eastern and overwhelmingly Sunni desert province of Deir al-Zor unprotected. Home to most of Syria's oil production and a long border with Iraq, across which fighters and supplies move relatively freely (jihadis flowed into Iraq from the Syrian side during the worst of that country's civil war) it's just the last front in an expanding war.

Much of the country has been swept up in lawlessness and banditry. While the Free Syrian Army (FSA) is the main rebel armed force, operating under the umbrella Syrian National Council, most of the rebel units are autonomous and locally run. Some take care to avoid harming civilians, others are unconcerned, operating out of heavily populated neighborhoods, and still others are indistinguishable from bandits. Government forces are as bad or worse, systematically looting conquered neighborhoods as a form of collective punishment and indulging in the torture for which the country's Baath regime is justly famous.

IN PICTURES: Conflict in Syria

The United Nations mission in Syria, which began with naive promises and quickly unraveled, is at this point irrelevant to the course of the conflict. Kofi Annan is no longer in charge, and though there's speculation that Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi will take his place, today's bomb attack in Damascus was next to a hotel filled with UN staff ? a reminder of how dangerous it has become to move around even the capital, let alone the country's full-fledged war zones.

At this point, a diplomatic resolution to the war is almost impossible to imagine. Mr. Assad's regime has absorbed major body blows, including the defection last week of Prime Minister Riad Hijab (a Sunni), but has not come close to cracking. The minority Alawite sect that Assad belongs to sees itself as locked into a war of group survival, not just regime survival.

The majority of the Sunni community that most rebel fighters draw from also fear surrender more than a continuing war. The history of Syria under Bashar al-Assad and his father and predecessor Hafez is one of unrelenting state terror for regime opponents. There would be absolutely no reason not to expect mass killings and whole families sent to state security dungeons would follow an abandonment of arms. Meanwhile, Al Qaeda-style jihadis have also entered the Syrian mix, much as they established a presence in Iraq during the sectarian civil war that began there after the US-led invasion in 2003.

So internally, the battle lines within Syria are clearly drawn. And no matter how much anyone might try to wish away the sectarian nature of the conflict, that is the reality. The external component of the war is just as sectarian.

On one side, there are Saudi Arabia and Turkey, aiding the rebels and hoping for the fall of Assad's regime. On the other, Iran and its local junior partner Hezbollah, the Shiite political party and militia based in Lebanon. The Saudis and other Gulf monarchies are desperate for a Sunni Islamist order to take root in Syria, both as a black eye for their hated Iranian enemies and as way to spread their own vision of a religiously strict political order across the Arab world. The US is a partner in this effort, albeit a reluctant and nervous one. The US and the Syrian rebellion may see the war as a fight for democracy.

But America's close regional partner Saudi Arabia despises democracy and has far different ambitions, much as it did in Iraq. There, Saudi Arabian interests lost, and a Shiite political order is emerging that is far more in Tehran's orbit than in Riyadh's or Washington's. In Syria, the demographics are far more in favor of Saudi Arabia's interests, and the Kingdom sees an opportunity to reshape the regional balance against Iran.

The Iranians, for their part, are standing firm with Assad. Long gone is the time when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah were feted on the streets of Arab capitals as symbols of resistance to Israel and US power in the region, never mind that they were Shiites. Today a squalid sectarian view of regional power is more common, with Iran seen as responsible for the death of children and general carnage in Syria much as the US was seen by the so-called Arab street in the middle of the last decade.

Iran is eager for the Alawite-dominated regime in Syria (the Alawite sect is an offshot of Shiite Islam) to stand firm. Iranian government mouthpiece Press TV reports that Syrian Ambassador to Iran Hamed Hassan said that Syria has "fallen prey to an axis of evil that centers on Tel Aviv and Washington" and that is also working through Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Iran agrees. The head of Iranian national security Saeed Jalili visited Damascus last week and said, "What is happening in Syria is not a domestic issue, but a conflict between the resistance axis and its enemies in the region and the world.?

Already the risks of a metastasizing sectarian conflict are clear. This week, rebels released a video of a bruised Lebanese man identified as Hassan Selim Meqdad. Mr. Meqdad said in a propaganda video released by his captors that he was a fighter from Hezbollah dispatched to Syria to fight on behalf of Assad. However, Hezbollah denied he was one of their fighters, and his family insists he was in Syria working for a Lebanese bank and has no ties to Hezbollah.

But the response in Lebanon was swift. Meqdad's Shiite clansmen said today they'd seized 20 Syrians and would hold them until he's released. In a propaganda video of their own released to a Lebanese TV station, two of the captives identified themselves as members of the Free Syrian Army.

Average Lebanese, with fresh memories of the horrors of their own civil war, are watching all this with some apprehension. While there is no sign of a major problem inside their country yet, the longer the Syrian war drags on, the greater the chance of spillover there will be. Syria, like Lebanon, hosts many Palestinian refugees, and both a flood of them or of Syrian Sunnis across the border ? or perhaps, Alawites in the case of major reversals for the government ? will heighten tensions inside the country.

And the complications don't stop there. Israel continues to occupy the Golan Heights. Syria, like Turkey and Iraq, hosts its own restive Kurdish population, some of whose members are eager to carve out an enclave for themselves along the lines of Iraqi Kurdistan. And while the Sunni Arab states of the region are hoping that the uprising wins, they also have to worry about the establishment of a major jihadi presence in Syria. Al Qaeda and like-minded groups hate the House of Saud almost as much as they hate the "apostate" Alawites.

About the only thing that can be said with certainty about Syria's war at this point is that it won't end soon, and that geopolitical maneuvering will have as much impact on its course as the desires of the country's 20 million people.

Ergonomics The Study of Workspace Design

The study of workplace design and the impact it has on the productivity and worker safety is called ergonomics. Literally "ergonomics" translates to "laws of work." Ergonomic specialists strive to enhance work surroundings by providing their recommendations to the employer in numerous different environments ranging from small family businesses to large office buildings. The way people interact with their working surroundings is seen as so important by several nations that government agencies, such as the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) in the US, make regulations governing workplace ergonomics.

The field of workplace ergonomics first emerged during WWII, when certain countries acknowledged the impact that the design of the workplace had on the productivity of their personnel. Even small changes to the work surroundings were found to help alleviate issues. More concentrated research into ergonomics began after the war ended until, by the 1980s, ergonomics was an accepted field. The term "ergonomics" and its "laws of work" became recognized by the general public as individuals sought to make their work environments much more comfortable.

The field of ergonomics is commonly better understood as physical ergonomics. The aspect of physical ergonomics is based on the science of designing workplaces so as to support the worker physically, such as the proper chairs to work in or the ideal arrangement of work stations. An ergonomic workstation is one in which the worker could sit in a comfortable position, and safely access equipment without creating strain. Physical ergonomics, therefore, makes recommendations concerning equipment design, room layout, and lighting arrangements - to be able to create a workplace in which people physically and comfortably fit.

Obtainable in nearly all stores are ergonomically designed furniture and machinery. Some of the more popular and accessible ergonomic furniture is made for people who work at a desk on computers the whole day. Computers could be a great source of physical distress, with keyboards in particular leading to repetitive stress injuries, yet numerous people these days work for long periods of time on the computer. In workplaces where computers are in use, it is very important to reduce the risk of discomfort, pain and disability because of recurring stress injuries.

One more kind of ergonomics is cognitive ergonomics. The classic stop sign is an instance of cognitive ergonomics. It is meant to be bold and highly visible, simple to understand, read and process. Any type of display needs to be designed with cognitive ergonomics in mind to make them simple to comprehend, utilize and process. Many of the most popular pieces of equipment and electronic gadgets rely on clear, usable interfaces. Designing for how the human brain works can make user interfaces a lot easier to use.

The principles of ergonomics can also be used in bigger organizations. Organizations must be structured and designed so as to improve innovation, efficiency, and satisfaction amongst employees. A poorly arranged organization would struggle with efficiency and productivity. Ergonomic consultants can be hired to be able to evaluate the way an organization is structured and make recommendations for improvement.

Will The New Yahoo CEO Focus On Local Businesses?

Will Marissa Mayer?s appointment as Yahoo?s new president and CEO impact your long-term local marketing plan? The answer may very well be yes.

As Google Employee No. 20, Mayer played an influential role in Google search and launched 100 well-known features and products during her tenure, ranging from image, book and product search to toolbar, iGoogle, Google News and even Gmail.

But Mayer?s most recent work involved heading up local, maps and location services for Google. Mayer was behind some of the major local search stories we?ve been talking about recently, like Google?s acquisition of Zagat, the launch of Google+ Local, and the ongoing evolution of (and new competition to) Google Maps.

The fact is, Mayer lives and breathes local, knows the increasing importance of local search, and is an expert in creating innovative user experiences in the space.

If she makes local a priority at Yahoo ? which still commands one of the largest audiences on the Web with 700 million monthly users ? she may help to revive its once dominant local search platform, Yahoo! Local.

As recently as last April, analysts including Greg Sterling were asking whether Yahoo! Local was on the chopping block. But the offering survived the closing of about 50 Yahoo sites/products and in May, Yahoo surprised us by launching Yahoo Marketing Dashboard, a free offering with premium services, that includes business listing offerings, online business reputation management, website traffic and online sales analysis, and more.

Now with Mayer?s new role, Yahoo may really be back on the map as yet another platform for local marketers to watch and reconsider.

?

Let?s take a look at Yahoo! Local today. The site, which?attracts in the neighborhood of 22 million unique monthly visitors (compared to Yelp?s 71 million monthly users), provides an overly basic user experience with minimal advertising opportunities for local businesses.

Users are presented with simple business listings featuring Yahoo user reviews and a compilation of reviews from other local sites. Local offers were added to Yahoo! Local in 2010 ? and the beta version of the site features daily deals and a compilation of deals provided by sites like Groupon and LivingSocial ? but the inventory is limited.

The Yahoo! Local mobile experience is also sparse with a generic mobile website and no app, although local business search is available via the Y! Search app.

Local businesses can choose between two listings options: a free basic listing with phone number, address, store hours, and products and services; and a paid enhanced listing to add a company logo and tagline, up to 10 photos and a detailed business description. Additionally, Yahoo! Local offers homepage, city guide, and category-specific ads as well as local coupons and deals.

Given where things stand at Yahoo! Local today, what changes might we expect for the offering with Mayer at the helm, and how will that affect your local business?

  • Mayer?s first directive may be to build out Yahoo! Local listings to allow businesses and users to add much more content ranging from menus to videos ? while eliminating the current paid barrier. Local businesses will need to create new content or repurpose existing content from their listings elsewhere to build out their Yahoo! Local profiles.
  • Mayer might team up with a popular local search site (she is an active Foursquare user) to integrate more reviews, deals and social media features. Mayer said at the time of Google?s acquisition of Zagat that ?getting local search right is important, and to do that you need great reviews.?
  • Given her role launching Google+ Local, Mayer also understands how important integrating social media into the local search experience will be for Yahoo! Local to be successful. It will be important to watch what partnerships come to be with Mayer in charge and how that impacts your local marketing plan.
  • While Yahoo maintains nearly the same number of business listings as a competitor like Yelp (17 million vs. 19 million, respectively), Mayer?s commitment at Google to create ?pages for all known places? might be a goal for Yahoo! Local. Yahoo may incentivize businesses to add or claim their listings, giving your local business a nice bonus for participating.

  • Mayer would likely significantly build out the currently limited Yahoo! Local mobile experience. Mayer knows that mobile is the next big thing in local: she recently discussed how 50% of usage for Google Maps comes from mobile devices, so she knows where that opportunity lies there. Mayer may focus on leveraging features like geo-targeted ads and augmented reality in ways that give Yahoo! Local a leg up on the competition. If so, your local business should evaluate the offerings and see if it makes sense to buy in to some of them.
  • I think many of us would agree that Yahoo! Local (and frankly, all of Yahoo) would benefit from a visual makeover. Right now, the site lacks the clean and streamlined design that many credit Mayer for championing at Google. We might expect Mayer to lead a major redesign of Yahoo that would extend into local ? new colors, fonts, graphics, etc. ? and vastly improve the ability of businesses to share content and users to find it.
  • Having designed and developed Google?s search interface, Mayer may take a look at Yahoo! Local search and make some changes. An interesting concept that Mayer has discussed is her work on ?contextual discovery? ? or in her words, ?search without search.? Mayer thinks there are ways to take one?s history, location and context to present interesting and unexpected results tailored to the individual. It will be interesting to see if Mayer finds ways to turn that thinking into action to Yahoo! Local, and important for businesses to ensure they use the right keywords to get found by the right consumers in their searches.

If Yahoo! Local improves, it would provide your business with access to an older and wealthier demographic. According to Nielsen data provided by our friends at Bing, more than 30% of Bing/Yahoo! searches come from users in the 55+ age demographic, and more than 20% have household incomes greater than $100,000.

Additionally, Bing/Yahoo! ads will be more affordable for local businesses than those on Google, which is currently more saturated.

We?ll be keeping an eye out on where Mayer puts her initial focus, because if it?s on local, it may be worth putting Yahoo! Local back in your marketing mix.

Political ad scares seniors with kill-hungry driverless cars

Driverless cars sure seem like the future. Google has already proven how safe these vehicles can be?? their Google Car project has recently logged over 300,000 miles without an accident. But if you're an elderly voter in Florida, you'd better be on your guard. Driverless cars are coming, and they want to eat your Medicare and all sorts of other evil technology things.

Florida State Rep. Jeff Brandes, a Republican, is seeking a job promotion this fall to the Florida State Senate in the St. Petersburg area. It turns out that Brandes has been pretty forward thinking on the issue of Google's driverless car, and has proposed legislation to get the Google Car cruising up the scenic byways of the Sunshine State as they do in Nevada.

That doesn't sit well with his opponent in today's primary election, fellow Republican Rep. Jim Frische.?The Committee to Protect Florida, in an attempt to boost Frische's candidacy, has put out the above negative ad against Brandes, helping all us undecided voters understand how terrified we should all be of these spooky cars that run on magic.

We've seen our share of contentious, truth-bending political ads before, but we've never seen anyone try to get a pitchfork-wielding mob focused on taking down driverless cars. Could such ads become standard during the 2012 campaign? We certainly hope so: It's crucial that our nation's elderly understand how these cars?? clearly programmed to have pro-Soviet sympathies?? will send their Social Security checks to China and make it so their grandkids can't visit anymore.
