Hong Kong v Kuwait ? Asian Cricket Council Trophy Elite 2012 (Group B) ? Match Recap

Bolstered by the strength of a solid all-round performance, Hong Kong claimed a 5-wicket victory over Kuwait in their Group B match during the ongoing Asian Cricket Council Trophy Elite 2012, played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on October 4.

Kuwait won the toss and elected to bat first ? however, Hong Kong?s Nizakat Khan (9-0-35-3), Nadeem Ahmed (9.1-3-17-2), and Tanwir Afzal (9-2-26-2) ensured that Kuwait did not exceed a final total of 177.

Openers Irfan Bhatti (14) and Abid Mushtaq (15) posted a combined total of 34 runs on the board, before Mushtaq was dismissed by Tanwir Afzal in the 9th over, and Bhatti followed him back to the pavilion in the very next over, trapped lbw by Nadeem Ahmed.

The following duo of skipper Hisham Mirza (24) and Kashif Sharif (29) set up the highest partnership on their side ? a 54-run stand for the third wicket. Their efforts got the team total up to 88, but both batsmen were dismissed by the 31st over.

Mohammad Amin top-scored for the team with 40, but was unable to find any consistent batsmen to partner with. Sibtain Raza (10), Alvin Patel (9), and Abdullah Akhunzada (1) were all mediocre, and the dismissals of Mohammad Ahsan (10) and Saad Khalid (2) at the hands of Nizakat Khan were followed by Amin?s departure off Nadeem Ahmed in the final over. Kuwait were eventually restricted, all out, to 177.

The chase posed no difficulties for Hong Kong, who reached the target within 43 overs, with 5 wickets down. Opener Waqas Barkat was dismissed on duck in the very first over by Mohammad Ahsan, but the duo of Irfan Ahmed (27) and skipper Jamie Atkinson (who top-scored for the team with 48) posted a combined total of 51 on the board, which bought the innings back on track.

Irfan Ahmed was trapped lbw by Ali Shahzad in the 9th over, but Atkinson soldiered on, going on to set up a 43-run partnership with Nizakat Khan (33), which got the team total up to 94 by the 20th over.

Atkinson was eventually swept off the pitch by Kashif Sharif - however, the batsmen did not allow the momentum to flag at any point. Nizakat Khan established a 31-run stand with Kinchit Shah (22), and after the former was dismissed by Abdullah Akhunzada, Shah went on to team up with Babar Hayat (29*) for a 34-run partnership for the 5th wicket.

Shah fell prey to a delivery by Saad Khalid in the 39th over, but an unbeaten 19-run partnership between Hayat and wicketkeeper batsman Anshuman Rath (11*) got the team safely up to 178, with 5 wickets and 44 balls remaining. Hong Kong will now be playing the UAE on October 6, while Kuwait will be facing Nepal on the same date.
