Look on your walls!? No doubt you have an etching, lithograph, silk screen, or woodcut somewhere in your home.? Americans have grown up with prints all around them ? in their own homes, in schools, offices, and museums -- yet we know so little about them.
Now, we have a rare educational opportunity to learn more about prints in America, their history and importance, as well as their aesthetic appeal.? Robin Garr, of the highly respected Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, will be our guest speaker on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13 at 1:15 p.m. at the Ridgewood Public Library.?
Ms. Garr?s knowledge of printmaking has developed over years of study and curating, most notably through recent exhibitions such as ?Alexander Calder:? Printmaker?, 2009 and ?American Prints from the Bruce Museum Collection?, 2008.? Robin Garr is a most engaging speaker who possesses the rare gift of transforming what might be a rather technical subject ? PRINTMAKING -- into a personal conversation highlighting insights and anecdotes about the art and artists.? She tells an absorbing story of where prints have come from and who made them and why they were made in the first place.
Printmaking reaches all of us ? it is not only a handsome art form but, for centuries, has been more affordable than oils or even watercolors in most cases.? Collectors are many today, but there is still a broad market with which to begin a collection or in which to purchase a special gift for someone.? Signed prints are a cherished art form and a truly wonderful way to bring original art into one?s life and home without greatly reducing the piggy bank!
