Zhejiang Zomax strengthens edge in R&D, quality | DIY Home ...

Upcoming garden tools and equipment are designed to meet international standards.

Zhejiang Zomax Garden Machinery Co. Ltd?posted growth of 20 percent in export sales last year. To ensure the upswing continues, it is taking several steps to differentiate its products and boost overall competitiveness.

In an interview with Global Sources, general manager Jin Chuanxin talks about the company?s strategies for the coming months.

What is your current R&D focus?

We are concentrating on the development of engines that comply with EPA and Euro II requirements.

In line with our plans to enter new domestic and foreign markets, we are raising our products? power and reducing exhaust emissions to ensure that they are stable and reliable. Our efforts are currently focused on 20 to 75 cc chain saws.

How are you ensuring product quality?

Our company complies with the ISO 9001 quality management system during production. We also implement source control and prevention projects. Group production methods and statistical process control techniques help us enhance on-line emission testing to ensure quality.

In addition, we have developed more durable chain saws.

We use plasma chemical vapor deposition to?coat?our?chain saw?engines. This makes the engine?s lifespan twice as long as regular ones and helps reduce emissions.

We equip our chain saws with Walbro carburetors for power and Oregon chains for stronger cutting ability. Relief valves help our chain saws start more easily. Plus, we manufacture the case out of magnesium alloy, while most of our competitors use heavier aluminum alloy.?

What are the challenges your company is currently facing? How are you dealing with them?

The one causing the most concern is rising manufacturing outlay. Our objective is to balance improving product quality and cost reduction.

To achieve a better equilibrium, we are enhancing our innovation capability, increasing the technological content of our products and boosting market competitiveness. In addition, we are establishing long-term cooperative and strategic win-win partnerships with our clients.

How are you differentiating your products?

We are building our in-house brand and offering quality products.

In addition, we are emphasizing product innovation, investing in the production of core components and improving cost management.

Do you plan to increase the automation of your factory?

Yes, we have plans to increase automation to meet clients? requirements and projected sales increases. The upgraded facilities and automatic production can help us control manufacturing costs better and enhance product quality.

Further, most suppliers are affected by the labor shortage. Automation will help us solve this problem as well.

Are you focusing mainly on ODM or OEM orders?

Our company focuses primarily on ODM development, and we have our intellectual properties and brands. Nonetheless, we also accept OEM orders.

Our R&D group of 100 members can develop four new power tool designs each month, including chain saws, pole saws and hedge trimmers. Each product undergoes 10 rounds of QC at our own testing lab, which helps ensure that our tools meet GS, CE, EMC and EPA requirements.

Do you plan to explore emerging markets?

We plan to explore emerging markets to expand our customer base at home and abroad in the next six months.

The EU and the US will still be among our target destinations because of their strong demand for high-quality products. At the same time, we will boost exports to the Middle East and Africa, where demand is expected to increase this year. We will adjust product functions and performance according to the requirements of our different markets.

What are your company?s export sales projections for the next six months?

Our export sales increased 20 percent in 2010, and we expect the upswing to continue in the next six months.

We will adjust export strategies in a timely manner in line with international trends. Pricing will be according to the fluctuation of raw material costs and other issues.
