Google upgrades Earth with better rendering, teaches it to sing in perfect harmony

Google's bringing a number of changes to its Earth service courtesy of version 6.2, including Google+ integration and improvements to search. Most notable here, however, is a new method of rendering that stitches aerial photos together in a manner less patchy than before, making for "the most beautiful Google Earth yet," according to the company. The new version is available now for download -- more info in the source link below.

NYC police commissioner son investigated after rape report (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Greg Kelly, son of New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, is under investigation, his lawyer said on Thursday following media reports that a Manhattan woman accused him of rape.

A woman around the age of 30 made the complaint against Kelly, a local television news host, on Tuesday night at a Manhattan police station, according to New York media reports. She said the incident occurred more than three months earlier.

To avoid possible conflicts of interest that might arise in a police investigation of the commissioner's son, the case was handed over to Cyrus Vance, Jr., the Manhattan District Attorney.

The New York Police Department did not immediately respond to queries about the case. A spokeswoman for the district attorney declined to comment on the case.

Andrew Lankler, Greg Kelly's lawyer, said his client was innocent.

"Mr. Kelly is aware that the New York County District Attorney's office is conducting an investigation," Lankler said in a statement to the media.

"Mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind, and is cooperating fully with the district attorney's investigation. We know the district attorney's investigation will prove Mr. Kelly's innocence."

The woman told police that she met Kelly on the street and had drinks with him in Manhattan on October 8, according to media reports. They then went to her office at a nearby law firm where she says he raped her, the media reports said, quoting unnamed law enforcement officials.

Her statements to police could not be independently confirmed by Reuters.

Kelly did not appear in his usual role as co-host of "Good Day New York" on the Fox station WNYW on Thursday morning. A spokeswoman for Fox Television Stations referred queries to Kelly's lawyer.

It's been a rough week for Commissioner Kelly, who came under fire on Wednesday from U.S. Muslim civil rights groups demanding his resignation over an offensive video shown to police officers.

The commissioner said he regretted cooperating with the makers of "The Third Jihad: Radical Islam's Vision for America," which shows footage of suicide bombers and says the "true agenda of much of Muslim leadership in America" is to "infiltrate and dominate America."

US Supreme Court won't review Venezuela suit (AP)

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? An Ohio investment group's lawsuit seeking to collect $100 million on three-decade-old Venezuelan promissory notes is headed back to a federal judge for further deliberations.

The decision by the U.S. Supreme Court not to hear the case was a setback for Venezuela, which argued that federal law protects it from U.S. lawsuits because it is a foreign state.

The high court declined on Monday to accept Venezuela's appeal of a 2010 federal appeals court decision that said the suit filed by Skye Ventures of Columbus could go forward in the U.S.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also said a lower court must determine whether the case should be tried in Venezuela, which will be the next step.

Skye seeks payment on the notes from a defunct government-sponsored bank.

Make way for cyclists in Tel Aviv

The 'Amsterdam of the Middle East,' Tel Aviv has miles of urban cycling paths and a new bike-share program.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

Back in the 1990s, Tel Aviv?s bicycles were pushed to the margins of the urban landscape, which lacked bike lanes or bike racks.

In the past decade, however, Israel?s cosmopolitan capital has reimagined itself as an Amsterdam of the Middle East with miles of bike paths on sidewalks, boulevards, and in the streets.

With its generally flat terrain and temperate climate, Tel Aviv is an ideal city to navigate on two wheels. The network, marked with bicycle stencils, runs the length of the city?s Mediterranean seacoast, reaches down leafy historical avenues, and sweeps through the commercial center. The city also inaugurated a bike rental system, the Tel-O-Fun, with some 150 rental stations throughout the city. Usage has exceeded expectations, and the distinctive green and gray bikes with upright seating have become ubiquitous. A leading enthusiast is Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai, who test-drove one of the Tel-O-Fun bikes and christened a bike traffic light.

Let?s be clear: Tel Aviv is no Amsterdam ? most of the bike lanes are on sidewalks. On trendy Rothschild Boulevard, the cyclists must dodge cafe tables, and on Ibn Gavirol, the bike path is interrupted by trees, benches, and building columns. But in a country where the volatile Israeli driver dominates the roads, some of that turf is being retaken by cyclists.

Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

Haiti to scold 'Baby Doc' for defying house arrest

(AP) ? The former Haitian dictator known as "Baby Doc" has been summoned to court to be scolded for violating the terms of his house arrest by venturing outside the capital, a judge said Thursday.

"Jean-Claude Duvalier needs to be in my office by 11:05 a.m." on Friday, Judge Carves Jean told the Associated Press at his the courthouse office in downtown Port-au-Prince. "If he's not, he'll be arrested by 11:10 a.m."

Duvalier's attorney argued that his client wasn't violating the law, because no such law exists. He also said he may file a complaint against the judge.

The law "is fantasy," lawyer Reynold Georges said by telephone. The judge "can do whatever he wants but he also has to pay the consequences. I'm a snake. I don't play."

Duvalier faces criminal charges that include embezzlement, torture and murder.

After making an unexpected return to his homeland last year, Duvalier was placed under house arrest, meaning he wasn't authorized to travel outside the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area without legal consent.

The former dictator, always dressed in a navy blue suit, has been seen traveling the country, often at the wheel of a SUV. He delivered a commencement speech to law school graduates at a university in the countryside last month and has been spotted lounging on the beach.

Duvalier attended a memorial service last week that marked the two-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake. The event was hosted by President Michel Martelly and guests included former Haitian president Prosper Avril and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the United Nations' special envoy to Haiti.

The prosecution of Duvalier has made little headway since it began last year and rights groups fear he will go unpunished.

Georges and the rest of the defense team argue there are no grounds to prosecute the former president because the statute of limitations on his alleged offenses has expired.

St. John's Vs. South Florida Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule And More

St. John's will be taking on the South Florida Bulls in a Big East Conference basketball game at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

It's been a tough year for the Red Storm this season. The Johnnies (8-9, 2-4) have struggled to score, only averaging 66 points per game. It's not a surprise that the team has seen it's share of bumps in the road. With such a young team there just isn't a lot of consistency right now.

South Florida (10-8, 3-2) has looked solid this campaign with a winning record thus far in conference play. The Bulls are led by senior forward Augustus Gilchrist and junior guard Jawanza Poland who average 11 and 10 points respectively.

South Florida is actually even more offensively challenged than the Red Storm (61 points per game) but plays with much more experience. The one area St. John's could dominate is on the glass. While the Red Storm aren't as big inside, the Bulls are not very good at cleaning the glass. St. John's can also look to run off of turnovers, which South Florida can be prone to in bunches.

Moe Harkless is the unquestioned star of the team and could have his way inside. If St. John's is going to win on the road against a tough Big East foe, Harkless will have to lead the young squad.

The game can be seen on SNY and ESPN3.

Williams, Djokovic into 3rd round in Australia (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Serena Williams was only two points from her 500th career match win when she tumbled to the court in the second round of the Australian Open.

It's OK, she thought, it's the good ankle. After sitting and watching Barbora Zahlavova Strycova's shot float out to end the penultimate rally, Williams got up and whipped a backhand winner down the line on match point to move into the third round with a 6-0, 6-4 victory on Thursday.

It improved her career record to 500-104 in tour matches and it was her 16th consecutive match win at Melbourne Park, where she has won five of her 13 Grand Slam titles.

"It's totally fine. It was my good ankle, so I'm good," she said, playing down concern that the fall had aggravated the left ankle sprain which hampered her preparation for the season's first major. "There was no extra pain. I twisted it. But it's all taped up, so the tape really, really helped."

She'd earlier put it down to just having "wobbly ankles."

"I wasn't meant to be a ballerina or anything," she told a post-match TV interview. It seems she was meant to be a tennis pro. Her older sister, Venus, has a win-loss record of 589-147 but is missing the Australian Open to recover from illness.

"I knew I had to get there too, because I do everything she does," said Williams, "It's great, it's like the ultimate."

Not quite.

"The first thing I asked, of course, 'Is there anyone that achieved a thousand?'" There's been two: Martina Navratilova had a career record 1,442-219, and Chris Evert retired with a 1,309-146 record.

"I never will get there either, but it's really cool," Williams said. "Five hundred is a lot of matches to play, let alone to win."

Williams won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2010 but didn't get to defend her title in 2011 because she was injured.

Novak Djokovic won the last men's title to kick off a stunning season, which started with a 41-match winning streak and finished with three of the four majors and the No. 1 ranking.

His 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Santiago Giraldo of Colombia on Thursday was his 16th in a row in majors and keeps him on track to become only the fifth man in the Open era to win three consecutive Grand Slam singles tournaments.

Sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who lost the 2008 Australian final to Djokovic, advanced 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 over Ricardo Mello of Brazil, while No. 5 David Ferrer struggled early against American Ryan Sweeting before coming back to win 6-7 (4), 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic, No. 23 Milos Raonic of Canada and No. 27 Juan Ignacio Chela also progressed. Frenchman Michael Llodra beat No. 32 Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 and Portugal's Frederico Gil beat No. 26 Marcel Granollers in four sets.

On the women's side, No. 2 Petra Kvitova scraped into the third round with a nervous 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Carla Suarez Navarro.

Kvitova, who lost in the first round at the U.S. Open in the first major after winning Wimbledon, lost the second set and was down a break in the third before recovering to beat the Spaniard.

"In the beginning it was OK but I made many, many, many mistakes," Kvitova said of her 48 unforced errors. "It's part of my game but it's too many. It was very tough to get back in the third set."

Maria Sharapova, one of the three former champions in the women's draw, reached the third round after just two hours on court in two matches.

The 2008 champion had a 6-0, 6-1 second-round win over U.S. qualifier Jamie Hampton in 64 minutes.

Sharapova did not play in any warmup events and spent nearly two weeks in Melbourne ahead of the season's first major while she rested an injured left ankle.

"It was more about getting my feet going ... worrying about myself," Sharapova said. "Yeah, started my preparations in the offseason a little late, took a bit of extra time in practice instead of rushing into a tournament."

She'll meet No. 30 Angelique Kerber, who beat Canada's Stephanie Dubois 7-5, 6-1.

Seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva, a two-time semifinalist at Melbourne Park, had a 6-1, 7-6 (3) over Lucie Hradecka . No. 21 Ana Ivanovic also advanced, beating Dutch player Michaella Krajicek 6-2, 6-3.

Three seeded players were ousted, with China's Zheng Jie beating No. 23 Roberta Vinci, Sara Errani beating No. 29 Nadia Petrova, No. 25 Kaia Kanepi losing to Ekaterina Makarova.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters is on the other half of the draw and advanced to the third round on Wednesday along with top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki, No. 3 Victoria Azarenka and former No. 1-ranked Jelena Jankovic.

Clijsters will next face longtime friend Daniela Hantuchova in the third round, and a win there could set up a fourth-round match against French Open champion Li Na, a rematch of the 2011 Australian final.

On the bottom half of the men's draw, No. 2 Rafael Nadal advanced without much trouble from his injured right knee or from German veteran Tommy Haas in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win. Four-time champion Roger Federer didn't even need to pick up a racket because Andreas Beck withdrew from their second-round match.

UK government sinks royal yacht idea for queen (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Britain's coalition government poured cold water on suggestions from a minister that taxpayers should fund a new royal yacht for Queen Elizabeth to mark her 60th year on the throne despite Britons dealing with severe austerity measures themselves.

The queen bade a sad farewell to the royal family's much-loved yacht Britannia in 1997 and Education Secretary Michael Gove recommended replacing it as a significant gesture to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, the Guardian newspaper reported.

"My suggestion would be a gift from the nation to her majesty; thinking about (Universities Minister) David Willetts' excellent suggestion of a royal yacht, and something tangible to commemorate this momentous occasion," the paper quoted his letter as saying.

The letter did make reference to Britain's current economic woes, but added that despite "and perhaps because of the austere times," the Jubilee celebrations should be greater than any that had gone before.

However, his idea was immediately scuppered by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and his Liberal Democrat deputy Nick Clegg.

"I don't think this would be an appropriate use of public money given the state of the nation's finances," Cameron's spokesman told reporters.

Commentators said a taxpayer-funded new yacht for the royals would not have gone down well with the public who are facing spending cuts, rising taxes, pay freezes, high inflation, and job uncertainty as Britain's economy struggles out of recession.

Clegg joked the issue would be about "the haves, and the have yachts."

"Most people in the country would think the diamond jubilee is a wonderful occasion for us to celebrate together as a community and as a nation," Clegg told reporters.

"But I suspect that most people in the country would think, given that there is very little money around, that this probably would not be the top of their list of priorities for the use of scarce public resources."

Britannia, a 6,000-tonne ship with a crew of 230, was decommissioned shortly after Tony Blair's Labour party came to power in 1997. Media reported the queen cried when she bade it farewell, the only time she has shed tears in public.

At the time the Conservative Party had called for a replacement yacht -- at an estimated cost of some 60 million pounds ($90 million) -- but a poll showed 72 percent of Britons disapproved of using public money for it.

Buckingham Palace said it had no comment on the story.

Evanescence Take Fans Inside 'My Heart Is Broken' Video

Clip doesn't premiere until Monday, but you can get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look right now!
By James Montgomery

Photo: Wind-Up Records

Last month, Evanescence invited MTV News to the set of their "My Heart Is Broken" video, where frontwoman Amy Lee told us about the dreamlike inspiration behind the clip (the 1988 British horror film "Paperhouse") and the nightmarish reasons she wrote the song in the first place: namely, the ongoing issue of sex trafficking.

"A lot of times when I write, I just sort of make up words, and something will stick, and I'll be like, 'Oh, that's from my subconscious. That's what I need to write the song about,' " she explained. "And that's sort of what happened [with the song]. I was like, 'I think I'm writing about this thing; it's on my heart,' just imagining being in such a trapped place and how that might feel, so the song was actually inspired by that idea."

So obviously, the video means an awful lot to Lee and her bandmates — which is why they chose to work with noted director and photographer Dean Karr, who filled the video with imagery that recalls both dreams and nightmares. And though the full "My Heart Is Broken" video doesn't premiere until Monday, Evanescence is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the clip's creation, with a making-of clip they sent exclusively to MTV News.

As you'll see — and hear — making "My Heart Is Broken" was a labor of love, for both the band and their director, one filled with fiber optics, elaborate costumes and, of course, striking, surreal imagery. But why don't you just have a look for yourself: Above, direct from Evanescence to you, is an exclusive look at the making of "My Heart Is Broken."

What are you expecting from the new Evanescence video? Let us know in the comments below!

(AP) ? Russell Westbrook hit a 3-pointer and then shimmied his hands down his torso, bent his body at the knees and strutted down the sideline in celebration.

Just 39 seconds later ? this time with less than a minute left in the game ? he did it all over again.

Westbrook scored 26 points, including two of Oklahoma City's four 3-pointers in the final 2 minutes, to help the Thunder beat the slumping Boston Celtics 97-88 on Monday night. Kevin Durant scored 28 with seven rebounds for Oklahoma City, which won its seventh consecutive game.

"They started doubling K.D. later in the game," Westbrook said. "I just tried to be aggressive and find my open spots."

Paul Pierce scored 24 points, Kevin Garnett had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Jermaine O'Neal had 12 points and 11 boards for the Celtics. Rajon Rondo scored 12 points with nine rebounds and nine assists for Boston, which lost a fifth straight game for the first time in the New Big 3 era.

"None of us likes to lose; that's the frustrating part," Pierce said. "I think I like where we are headed, there are just little things that are really killing us."

After trailing by 10 points to start the fourth quarter, the Celtics cut the deficit to two before Durant hit a 3 that made it 81-76 with 4:42 left. Garnett made a pair of free throws, then Durant threw down a tomahawk dunk.

Oklahoma City then hit four 3-pointers in a row ? one from Thabo Sefolosha, two from Westbrook and another from Sefolosha that made it 95-85 with 24 seconds left. The Thunder were 2 for 11 from 3-point range in the first three quarters and 5 for 8 in the fourth.

"We stayed with it," Durant said. "We made some good shots. Our offense is predicated on the drive-and-kick; that's what we work on every day."

Kendrick Perkins had seven points and five rebounds in his first game back in Boston since the trade that sent him to Oklahoma City and broke up the starting lineup from the Celtics' 2008 NBA championship team. In the first quarter, his old team played a video on the scoreboard with highlights from his 7? years in Boston.

"Mentally, I was out of it," said Perkins, the 27th pick in the 2003 draft. "It was unbelievable. I really appreciated it. It was something they didn't have to do."

Perkins went over to the Celtics bench before the opening tip to hug the coaches and chest-bump some of his former teammates, and midway through the first quarter a video tribute was played on the scoreboard. The crowd gave him a standing ovation, which Perkins acknowledged by walking to center court alone and waving.

"It was emotional for him. He grew up here," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "He's loved by his former coach, teammates and the fans, and rightfully so. He does everything that you want your player to do. ... That's a classy organization, for what they did on the scoreboard."

Boston cut the deficit to 83-80 with 2:25 to play, but Westbrook cut across the lane and whipped a two-handed pass to Sefolosha in the corner for the 3. After Rondo scored on a putback, Westbrook hit a 3-pointer of his own ? then celebrated by strutting down the sideline.

Garnett hit Mickael Pietrus to set up a Celtics 3-pointer, but Westbrook answered again to make it 92-85.

The Celtics had not had a five-game losing streak since they lost seven straight and eight of the last nine games of the 2006-07 season, a year when they also had an 18-game losing streak that was the longest in franchise history. That summer they began assembling the New Big 3 ? bringing in Garnett and Ray Allen to join Pierce, with Rondo and Perkins rounding out the lineup for a team that won the franchise's 17th NBA title.

Boston returned to the finals in 2010, but Perkins tore up his knee in Game 6 against the Lakers and missed Game 7, which Los Angeles won 83-79.

With Perkins' rehabilitation due to last well into the following season, general manager Danny Ainge signed Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal. Confident that they would remain healthy contributors, Ainge traded Perkins to Oklahoma City for Nenad Krstic and Jeff Green, but neither of them was able to remain in the lineup and the Celtics lost in the second round of the playoffs to Miami.

The trade looked even worse when Green was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm, requiring surgery that put him out for this entire season. He is now a free agent.

Notes: New England Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty and receiver Julian Edelman took time off from their preparations for the AFC championship to attend the game. ... The teams split their games last year, each winning on the road. Durant missed the game in Boston with a sore left ankle. ... Thunder guard Reggie Jackson played at Boston College. ... Technological and communications deprivation ? Rob Jackson's Blog

I currently have two PhD students funded by AWE. Their projects are not weapons-based, and I am very grateful for the funding, especially at a time when the EPSRC are trying to leave people like myself high and dry. An important part of a research collaboration is, of course, meetings. Not everything can be done by e-mail, chat (e.g. IM, Skype etc) or telephone, and face-to-face discussions are vital. But, here as they say, is the rub. The AWE don?t allow laptops or mobile phones onsite. You can see the rationale in terms of protecting secret information, but it?s rather hard to apply this to our particular projects! Nevertheless, rules are rules.

We have our next meeting on Thursday. I planned the date because I have another meeting tomorrow in London, so I can stay over and travel the comparatively short distance to Reading on Thursday morning. But I wasn?t thinking clearly at the time! It means 2 days, yes, 2 days without a mobile phone or a laptop, which for a connected (OK and internet-addicted) individual like me is almost impossible to contemplate. Internet cafes will have to provide some respite, but they are not my favourite locations. And my diary and contacts are all on my phone ?

I should of course say that you can take mobile phones and laptops and leave them at AWE?s reception. But I?m not prepared to do that, as anything is left at the owner?s risk, and it is not a risk I am prepared to take.

Of course I?ll survive, but I do think it is ridiculous that in the 21st Century there are still places that have these restrictions.

But it?s time to stop wingeing and get back to the marking!

DIY Apple Cups for Cider or Applejack [Drinking]

DIY Apple Cups for Cider or ApplejackWe're a little past fall, but I always enjoy a little fresh or hard apple cider and thought this was a clever concept. You can create your own apple cups by slicing off the top of an apple and carefully removing the interior apple flesh and core with a spoon or melon baller.

Baking weblog Gimme Some Oven has detailed photographs that show you where to cut and how much apple you need to leave at the edges. If you're having a few friends over for a cocktail I think these would be an interesting way to serve drinks along with the cucumber shot glasses we covered earlier.

I like to make a simple applejack type drink by mixing 3 parts apple cider with 2 parts Jack Daniels. Add a pinch of nutmeg and stir with a cinnamon stick. It's a great warm pick-me-up on a cold evening.

Nations seek answers over Italy cruise accident

Language barriers, overwhelmed local authorities, squads of foreign diplomats with lists of awkward questions ? the international mix of passengers and crew aboard the stricken Costa Concordia cruise liner added to the complications Saturday for Italian officials handling the emergency.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Winter surprises at Niagara Falls

While the vast majority of tourists visit in the summer, they certainly miss out on Niagara?s cold-weather riches, including bird-watching, a wine festival and a light festival.

    2. National pinball museum gets a replay
    3. Room Key joins the hotel search party
    4. Send a paper postcard from your smartphone
    5. See a national park for free this weekend

Local authorities were fielding inquiries from dozens of nations worried about the 4,234 people who were aboard the ship when it ran aground and tipped over off the coast of Italy, including Italians, Germans, French, Britons and Americans, and about 1,000 crew members from across the globe.

As international travel has grown easier, aid agencies and lawmakers alike have frequently warned of the potential for confusion in the wake of international emergencies, as sometimes competing nations or international organizations arrive at a disaster site.

In Italy, a host of countries sent diplomatic staff to the scene as three bodies were recovered from the sea off the tiny island of Giglio, close to the coast of Tuscany.

British ambassador Christopher Prentice said he had seen his counterparts from Germany and Spain at local hospitals, where diplomats were checking identities and tallying numbers of those injured.

Officials from the U.K. and Australia set up a joint base at Porto Santo Stefano middle school, which had been transformed into a temporary holding center for rescued passengers.

Though the school was a scene of chaos as passengers tried to find buses to take them back to Rome or the coastal town of Savona and embassy officials cross-referenced ship logs and passenger lists, Prentice said nations were cooperating well.

"This is obviously a very serious and major incident. My impression at this stage is that the Italian authorities have responded excellently and our cooperation with them has been very good," Prentice said, as he offered advice to Britons at the school.

Other embassies sent lower-level officials to work with the ship operator Costa and local authorities, offering help to foreign passengers who didn't speak Italian and were struggling to understand the response to the accident or how to get home.

Consular officials wore bright green or orange emergency vests to identify themselves to their co-nationals, offering help in how to obtain emergency passports, since many non-Europeans had to turn them in to cruise officials upon boarding.

Prentice said that in a still unfolding crisis scenario, good coordination was key. "It is about cooperation, and things are being done here very calmly and sensibly, I've been impressed by the effort of the Italian authorities," he said.

As nations were still attempting to confirm the identities of passengers who had been rescued from the ship, rescuers focused on several dozen people still unaccounted for.

Monty Mathisen, of the New York-based publication Cruise Industry News, said Costa would be well prepared to handle the demands of countries searching for news of the passengers and crew.

"They are well set up to deal with those kind of issues," said Mathisen. "The cruise industry is one of most regulated industries."

Marcus Oxley, then disaster management director of the relief charity Tearfund told a committee of British lawmakers in 2006 of the nightmare confronting local authorities as organizations descend on an area requesting information, or offering help.

"In the white hot heat of an emergency, these things are extraordinarily difficult to do," he said.

Stringer reported from London.

Children's Drowning Injuries, Deaths Decline: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Jan. 16 (HealthDay News) -- More than 1,000 children die from drowning in the United States each year and another 5,000 are injured, but these casualties have declined dramatically since the early 1990s, a new study shows.

The number of children who died annually from drowning after being admitted to a hospital declined 42 percent between 1993 and 2008. Total trips to the hospital after drowning-related incidents declined by 51 percent among children during that time, researchers found.

"There have been efforts at education from a variety of groups," said study author Stephen Bowman, an assistant professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. "One would think that those messages are getting across."

"We need to keep up our diligence to continue to reduce drowning-related deaths and injuries," he added.

The study, published online and in the February issue of Pediatrics, used the National Inpatient Sample, a vast database compiled by a consortium of about 1,000 hospitals.

Drowning injuries are the second leading cause of accidental trauma in children in the United States. Only car accidents injure more children, Bowman said. Nonfatal drowning often results in brain damage and long-term disability, according to the study.

Breaking down different levels of risk, the study found that children less than 4 years old are most likely to die in drowning incidents, usually in bathtubs or after falling into water. Older children are more likely to drown while swimming, according to research cited in the study, with the risk rising in warmer regions of the South and West that have longer swimming seasons.

Boys, meanwhile, are four to six times more likely than girls to suffer a drowning injury, possibly because they drink alcohol while swimming or overestimate their swimming skills, according to study background information, and between 30 and 50 percent of teen and adult drownings are caused, at least partly, by drinking.

The study found a 40 percent drop in hospital visits following bathtub-related drownings among children under 4 years old and a 50 percent decline in swimming-related hospital trips for children ages 10 to 14. In warmer parts of the country, drowning injuries declined by almost 50 percent during the study period.

"We wanted to create some benchmarks," so that various states and regions could measure their progress against national trends, Bowman said.

While the number of drowning deaths and injuries has dropped, the cost of medical treatment has remained about the same because expenses per case have grown, Bowman said.

"The relative cost per drowning case has risen dramatically and offsets the reduction in hospitalizations," Bowman said.

In 2000, costs associated with such injuries exceeded $5.3 billion, including $2.6 billion for children up to 14 years old, the study said.

The reason for the decline in drowning cases among the youngest children may be "targeted injury-prevention efforts" aimed at parents and caregivers of young children, the study said.

For children of all ages, other factors in reduced drowning rates include education, public health initiatives and safety legislation, according to the head of an organization devoted to preventing accidental childhood injury and death.

Kate Carr, chief executive officer of Safe Kids Worldwide, cited federal legislation passed in 2007 requiring pool and hot tub drains to have covers and calling for other safety measure to be taken by states. The law followed the drowning death of a child whose mother was unable to free her from the suction of a hot-tub drain.

"You can see that it is working. It is not the only thing, but it is one thing that has worked," Carr said.

The study is important, she said, because it helps safety organizations target their efforts at regions where more drownings occur. It "allows us to celebrate the progress that has been made," but more efforts are needed because "one death is one too many," she said.

Barack Obama's Fundraising Will Steamroll Every Other Candidate (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama raised more than $200 million for his re-election campaign in 2011 and plans to raise more than the $750 million he spent in 2008 for his fall campaign against the Republican nominee. At some point, Americans have to step back and say "That's just crazy."

Every modern president seems to raise the bar on fundraising by trumping whatever record held up until that point. Reuters reported the Obama campaign is attempting to spread a campaign contributor program that has been very successful in attracting maximum contributors. A major incentive to becoming a maximum contributor (by donating $5,000 to the campaign) is the access it gives to the president and his advisers.

Obama certainly changed that game with a record amount in 2008. I'm not sure what the answer to this new level of campaign spending insanity is, but most intelligent people would agree that spending close to $1 billion on a presidential race is ridiculous, even for a country as large as the U.S.

Maybe the answer is to shorten the campaign period, but that tends to empower the incumbent. Requiring each campaign to spend the same amount further empowers an incumbent, as they have ready access to media -- something a challenger may not possess. Public financing of presidential campaigns just seems un-American. And mandatory media access would never work in a country where television markets widely differ from region to region.

It's for those very reasons that the fundraising process becomes more ingenious with every electoral cycle and the money raised skyrockets as well. Obama's staffers have proven themselves to be very proficient at fundraising for the president. In fact, they are the best ever. So until we devise a new system, expect every candidate to challenge the record fundraising of the previous election. If Mitt Romney is the GOP nominee -- and that appears more likely every day -- he will be able to give Obama's fundraising a better challenge than John McCain did in the last contest.

Indonesian village riven by massacre compensation (AP)

RAWAGEDE, Indonesia ? Relatives of men executed by Dutch troops in this tiny Indonesian village fought for six decades to get compensation that was supposed to heal wounds. They have the money now, but it has ripped Rawagede apart once again.

Only a few of the residents ? most of them widows in their 80s and 90s ? brought the case to court.

But hundreds were killed, so many more suffered. Claiming part of the $270,000 was rightfully theirs, old friends and neighbors cajoled, bullied and intimidated the plaintiffs and their families until local officials jumped in, forcing them to part with half their cash.

"It's not fair," said Muskar Warjo, who lost his father and grandfather in the massacre that wiped out nearly the entire male population of Rawagede. "Our lawyers said the money belonged to us, that we could use it as we saw fit."

Dutch soldiers clinging to their retreating colonial empire arrived before dawn on Dec. 9, 1947 in search of a well-known resistance leader and ? after getting no help ? led up to 430 boys and young men to a rice field and shot them one by one.

It took 64 years, but in September a Dutch court ordered its government to apologize for the killings and to give each of the 10 plaintiffs $27,000. Three died during the course of the trial and the money went to their families instead.

Muskar, representing his mother after her death in 2009, said almost immediately after the verdict was handed down, mobs surrounded his home, the faces of people he'd known all his life, twisted with hatred and anger.

"There were hundreds of them, screaming, threatening to burn down my house if I didn't give them some of my money," said the 75-year-old, his eyes brimming with tears. "In the end, I didn't have any choice."

The court ruling has paved the way for similar allegations of war crimes during the Netherlands' centuries-long rule in Indonesia ? and raised the possibility of further compensation.

But good intentions went awry in this small farming village of 3,000 where ? as in other parts of this sprawling, developing nation of 240 million ? quick turns of fortune are rarely celebrated by those left behind, trying to eek out a living on as little as $2 a day.

In Rawagede, the jealousy even set siblings against each other.

Muskar escaped the mob outside his house on Dec. 27 and ? after a community decision to divvy up the cash ? was escorted by local authorities to a neighboring village for his own safety until tensions eased.

Still afraid, he decided to go instead to a relative's house just outside the capital, Jakarta. Before long, however, Rawagede officials showed up in a van to bring him home. They said they could guarantee his safety, but in turn wanted him to sign a letter agreeing to part with his money, Muskar said.

In the end, his mother's dream to replace their rickety, wooden shack with a new brick house remains just that, he said: a dream.

Additional compensation in the works would benefit the community as a whole: the Dutch government promised three years ago to provide $1.2 million in "development aid" to build a school, hospital and market in Rawagede. But even that money has been caught up in a dispute. It remains stuck in The Hague because of a disagreement between two Indonesian foundations ? both claiming to represent the villagers' interests.

Officials at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not immediately be reached for comment about any of the compensation disputes.

The executions still loom large in Rawagede.

A hero's cemetery, with row after row of simple white grave stones, has been built on the outskirts. The anniversary is marked by the whole town every year.

Old women and men, their faces heavily grooved and backs curved by scoliosis, tremble when talking about the morning Dutch troops arrived in their village by the hundreds and opened fire, sending sleepy residents scattering from their homes in panic.

Some hid under beds with their children. Others concealed themselves in bushes or jumped into rivers, helpless as they watched the soldiers round up all the boys and men they could find.

Forced to squat in rows, with both hands placed on the backs of their heads, they were shot, the survivors say.

Kadun bin Siot was among those who protested the court award.

"What about me?" he said, his lips quivering as he struggled to contain his emotion. "Why don't I deserve to be compensated. I suffered as much as they did."

He was 12, peering through the slats of a wooden barn as soldiers flushed his father out of his hiding place in a trash heap, stabbing it with bayonets until he emerged, blood pouring from his face.

"They dragged him away," said the 76 year-old farmer. "I never saw him again."

"I'm very angry at the Dutch. First the killings and now this. The way they are handing out money," he said. "It's just created jealously, anger."

It was after hearing many such complaints that Mamat, the village chief, decided to call a meeting. He invited plaintiffs and their families ? as well as police and other top local officials ? to reach an agreement. The widows and their families should share. People like Kadun ended up getting $500, a lot in Rawagede, but not nearly enough to fully appease anyone.

"It's an extremely sensitive situation," said Mamat, who goes by only one name. "The Dutch government can't be expected to understand that money, distributed unfairly, causes new problems. We all know it's impossible to make everyone happy, but we had to try."

The plaintiffs say in the end the money may have caused more problems than good.

The family of 92-year-old Wanti Dodo was ripped apart.

What the widow wanted was a few gold bracelets and rings ? a dream she had since childhood. The rest she divided between her seven sons and daughter. Two of her children protested ? those from Wanti's first husband, Enap, who was killed in the massacre.

They felt they deserved more, said Iwa Kartiwa, Wanti's son.

The hassling by villagers started as soon as the court handed down its verdict, he said. Every time the phone rang, neighbors would flock to the house and pepper them with questions.

Was it news about the compensation, the would ask. How much was it? When would it arrive?

The tone quickly grew hostile.

Soon their house, too, was surrounded by a mob.

"We didn't 'agree' to give away the money. We had to," said Cawi, his sister.

"What else could we do?"

(AP) ? On the National Mall in Washington, Martin Luther King Jr. is a towering, heroic figure carved in stone. On the Broadway stage, he's a living, breathing man who chain smokes, sips liquor and occasionally curses.

As Americans honor King's memory 44 years after he was assassinated, the image of the slain civil rights leader is evolving.

___

THE MEMORIAL

The new King memorial, which opened in August in the nation's capital, celebrates the ideals King espoused. Quotations from his speeches and writings conjure memories of his message, and a 30-foot-tall sculpture depicts King emerging as a "stone of hope" from a "mountain of despair," a design inspired by a line of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Some gaze upon this figure in silence. Some smile and pull out cell phone cameras. Others chat about how closely the statue resembles King. And some are moved to tears.

"Just all that this man did so that we could do anything and be anything," said Brandolyn Brown, 26, of Cheraw, S.C., who visited the memorial Saturday with her aunt and cousin.

"I know it took a lot more than him to get to where we are, but he was a big part of the movement."

Brown's aunt, Gloria Drake, 60, of Cheraw, S.C., said she remembers King almost as though he was Moses leading his people to the promised land, even when there were so many reasons to doubt things would get better in an era of segregated buses, schools and lunch counters.

"It was really just hostile," she said. "... And then we had a man that comes to tell us things are going to be better."

"Don't be mad, don't be angry," she recalled King's message. "Just come together in peace."

They said King's lasting legacy is the reality of equality and now having a black president. Drake said President Barack Obama reminds her of King with his "calmness" even in the face of anger.

Christine Redman, 37, visited the memorial with her husband, James Redman, 40, and their young son and daughter. She said they also feel a personal connection to King.

"We're a mixed family, and we know that without a lot of the trials that he went through to help end segregation and help the races to become one, we would not be able to have the freedoms to love who we want to love and be accepted in the world," she said.

Her son, 8-year-old Tyler, echoed his mom: "And be who we want to be."

The family tries to celebrate King's birthday by finding a way to serve others, they said. They were thinking about volunteering at a food pantry or donating toys for needy kids.

When he thinks of King, James Redman said he thinks of hope. Still, he said, King's legacy is lost on many.

"Dr. King was about love and about cooperation and compromise and working together," he said. "We don't see a whole lot of that in our leaders. We don't see a whole lot of it in our citizenry."

___

THE STAGE

On Broadway, theatergoers are seeing a different version of King ? one that is more man than legend.

The realism was refreshing for Donya Fairfax, who marveled after leaving a matinee of "The Mountaintop" that she had never really thought of King cursing, as actor Samuel L. Jackson does while portraying King in the play.

"He was human and not someone who was above fault," said the 48-year-old, visiting from Los Angeles. "He cursed. He did things that people do behind closed doors. He was regular."

For some, such a portrayal would seem to chip away at King's memory. But for Natalie Pertz, who at 20 has come to know King only through the gauzy view of history, it seemed a precious reminder that it is not beyond the reach of the ordinary and the flawed to effect change.

"It's important for people our age to see that he wasn't this saint-like figure," she said. "It's making you see that just because you're not perfect, it doesn't mean you can't do good."

For M.E. Ward, seeing an in-the-flesh incarnation of King brought her back more than 40 years, to when she watched his soaring speeches on the television. No matter how human he seemed on stage, she said, he still carried a godly gift.

"Still charismatic, still an orator, and an individual who was able to move people through his speech," she said, adding that King enlightened the world with a message "to be peaceful, to be patient, to be non-violent."

No matter how distant his presence is now, that legacy is still very relevant, she said, in what she called "a world of turmoil and violence, constant violence."

Do people idealize him too much?

"They don't do it enough!" said 64-year-old Elisabeth Carr, who cried through most of the play, feeling some of the pain she felt when the civil rights leader died. "The younger generation, they don't know anymore. ... They don't understand what they went through."

After traveling more than five hours with three friends ? all of them African-American ? to see Saturday's matinee, Mariko Tapper Taylor said seeing King in all his flaws did nothing to diminish his legacy.

"It's better to remember him as human," she said. "Who's flawless? It just shows that there's another side of him."

For her, the holiday remains very personal, Taylor said.

One of her friends, Dr. Donnita Scott, chimed in:

"If it wasn't for him we probably wouldn't be doctors," she said, nodding at the group, which includes two ER physicians and a psychiatrist.

Dr. Jan Thomas agreed:

"We're standing on that mountaintop."

Rick Santorum's Outrage with President Obama Is Hypocritical (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Rick Santorum was just beside himself at a New Hampshire campaign stop at St. Anselm College on Saturday when he turned to education. He blasted President Barack Obama for having the audacity of wanting a college education for all kids.

Santorum said, "The hubris of this president to think that he knows what's best for you. I have seven kids, maybe they'll all go to college. But if one of my kids wants to go and be an auto mechanic, good for him, that's a good paying job, using your hands, using your mind."

He continued: "This is the kind of snobbery that we see from those that think they know how to run our lives. Rise up America, defend your own freedoms."

When did education become a dirty word? Even an auto mechanic needs specialized training to understand how to deal with today's computerized vehicles. Higher education, whether it's from a college, trade school or community college opens doors that might otherwise be closed to just a high school diploma. But this isn't about Santorum's complaint about President Obama's snobbery. It's about his own. "This is the kind of snobbery we see from those that think they know how to run our lives." Kind of like how Santorum wants to run the lives of people who are gay and women who exercise their constitutional right to an abortion.

If elected, Santorum wouldn't have any problem imposing his social and religious beliefs on the rest of the country, putting big government where it doesn't belong. I have no problem with his unwavering defense in his beliefs, but it's not his right to force his moral views on others who have their own strong beliefs opposite of his. His opposition to contraceptives is his right, but he doesn't have the right to force his contempt of birth control on women who hold a different view. The pill has been used for years for health benefits that have nothing to do with contraception.

Santorum's outrage over President Obama's comments, which were meant to encourage children, is petty and hypocritical. Rick Santorum wouldn't hesitate to impose his moral beliefs in the form of constitutional amendments if he had the power of the presidency. I've often wondered if Republicans are afraid of educating everyone because education makes them less likely to be manipulated by fear.

Santorum talks small government, but when you listen to what he is really saying; his vision of government isn't small and he would strive to make sure his government dictates to us how we should live, who we will love, how we pray and whose moral compass we will follow.

Santorum's "education" outrage is in its own right hubris and snobbery. He apparently doesn't understand the importance of education in an ever changing world and he doesn't understand why we all have a right to our own view of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
